Dark matter would not be Higgs particles, because Higgs particles are unstable. There are several possible candidates, and the most prominent of these has been a purported Lightest Supersymmetric Particle.

LSP's cannot decay, so a LSP can disappear only by running into another LSP and annihilating. That is a very improbable event at present-day densities, so the LSP's continue to exist.

That requires that Supersymmetry be true. It hasn't been proven since none of the super-partner particles have been found.

But yeah, they're still looking for the WIMPs of dark matter.
