Books to make you cry

I just finished Never Let Me Go, having avoided it for years because one of my friends hated it and ranted on about it for a long time. But I adored it because I love tragedy, and it was one of the saddest books I've ever read.

I write a blog about sad, depressing and bleak media so I need some more to follow on from NLMG. Any recs?

Childhood, by Jona Oberski. (An adult recalls his childhood in Bergen-Belsen.) I read it once and can still quote lines from it because it ripped out my heart and shredded it.

Erin Morgenstern's The Night Circus. I cried at the end.

I hate crying.

Ugh. I was given this book at my baby shower. Oh, I cried. (Even though the illustrations were a little weird.)

How about The Yearling? I didn't even read the whole thing, just skimmed through it recently quickly to familiarize myself with the story. Then I got to the end, and it hit me very hard. The most simple line, and I was crying like a baby. It's about innocence lost. I'm tearing up just thinking about it.

If you have kids? I cried at that book way before I had any kids.

Another lesser-known kids' book that has the same effect: Always Gramma by Vaunda Micheaux Nelson. It's about a little girl whose grandmother gets Alzheimer's.

I'm not sure if you're looking for nonfiction books as well, but I was listening to Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder and had to pull the car over before the crying made it unsafe for me to drive.

IS ANYBODY OUT THERE? by Marian Keyes made me sob like a baby at the end. Literally sob. It was awful; I hate crying.

And Keyes is usually fairly light-hearted, even with the tough subjects she tackles. I figured out what the book was about not far into it, so I have only myself to blame for continuing to read, but geez, I was not expecting to bawl at the end.

I often cry at the end of books, but not usually during the book, except when reading my own books. I cry more at movies actually, probably because they have music.

The Time Traveller's Wife had me blubbing softly on a plane.

Bear, Otter and the Kid by TJ Klune has me weeping a bit right now. This scene is tearing my heart out.

The Colour Purple by Alice Walker. It was nearly thirty years ago, I was much younger then and I cried a little every now and then throughout the book.
