Getting Sweeter

Any fun subject matter suggestions for me to write about if teen girls are my target market...? I'm looking for some sweet ideas and inspirations for 2006! Thanks...

What aren't teenage girls into? My 13 year old sister loves anything to do with makeup, modelling, handbags, shoes, clothes, and hairstyles. When I was 13, I would have read anything that wasn't about the above - horses, movies, TV show novelizations....philosophy.

My 13 year old daughter is into "The Sims", anything 'Goth' Especially "The Nightmare Before Christmas" (There is a store called "Hot Topic" you should look into, also.) Music...both metal and classical. She likes trying to play the metal on the violin. ( Disturbed is the band that comes to mind...evidentally this guy named Joey is to swoon after) She likes to read scary stories, she likes to write. She likes crafts like beading and scrapbooking, and she likes to watch DVD's in one of the alternate languages they give you. She's not so much into makeup, although she wears it, but she does like to look through fashion magazines with her friends.

If I remember later, I'll come back with her and have her answer your question. She might say something different than me.

It depends. The teenage years covers a lot of years. 13 year olds don't have the same interests as the 16 year olds, so the target has to be very specific.

Hey, Caroline, write about silk shirt sayings! Kids are really into them. I was going to do a story on it but found it too complicated.

What is the true meaning behind the shirts?
Do all of them have a double meaning?

All the teens are into them.... some are funny, some are gross...some definitely have double meanings.

I saw a guy wearing a shirt with a picture of a dachsund on it and "I love my wienie"
another shirt had a sign with two girls holding hands (my daughter said it means that the girl is a lesbian) I didn't know that.
Another had a picture of a squirrel with logo "Protect your nuts"

the more controversy shirts are sold everywhere my girls love to shop: Hot Topic, American Eagle, Hollister, Abercrombie, etc. as well as Target and all regular department stores.

Hot topic is a store that my friends and I go. I myself am a goth and my friends are punk.
Nous aimes parler francais et espagnol.
We enjoy movies like Saw II, and Kill Bill.
We like to read sci-fi, and fantasy.
Rock, punk, and show tunes.
Target is soooo cool!

Yeah, teenage girls these days love to be 'punk' or 'goth'. I find it rather pathetic, really, because what they are is not 'punk' or 'goth' anymore. It should go by another name. -sigh-

The problem with speaking spanish and french is this:
No todas las personas que lean esto van a entender lo que digo, o no todos tienen el suficiente conocimiento del español para entender español dentro de un libro.
C'est le même avec le francais, beaucoup de gens ne parle pas francais.
There are some translation difficulties among different languages, although it is trendy and even cool to speak more than one language.

It's not the same to say:
- Prestame dinero para comprarme quesadillas y refresco.
or say:
- Pichame baro pa' comprarme kekas y chesko.

Both mean the same, but one is 'correct' spanish and the other is usual spanish

No offence to RubyRoo, but I despise the current "goth" culture for one reason - they stole the Nightmare Before Christmas away from me. I can't express my enthusiasm for it without being called a goth. I love all of Burton's work, but I view this film as the epitome of his artistic skill. Also, Danny Elfman's score is mind blowing. The fact that he voices Jack is the icing on the cake.

The Nightmare Before Christmas was the peak of many years of collaboration between these two creative masters, and at the same time set new boundaries for film making, being the first ever feature-length stop-motion animation film. It's a MASTERPIECE and nothing less. However, the fact that it has bats and skelletons and vampires and pumpkins and other halloweeny stuff makes it the prime target for "tween gothics". They're loving it for all the wrong reasons, namely because their friends love it. And as there are far more goths than there are Burton/Elfman enthusiasts, we kind of get drowned out.

What do bats and skelletons and vampires and pumpkins and other halloweeny stuff have to do with the REAL goth subculture? Er... nothing! Who here can tell me what the real goth subculture is all about? Nope, it's not about dressing all in black with weird makeup, listen to Marylin Manson, Cradle of Filth and other metal, moan about how depressing life is, cut yourself and write dark poetry while hiding from the rest of society.

Same happens with the so-called punks. They have no idea what the punks were all about in the first place, they just run around screaming "f***k the system!" and painting anarchy sings on walls and listening to pop groups like Blink 182 because they wear mohawks and funny clothes and THAT must make them punks.

So yeah, I'm disgusted with the punks and goths of today. Maybe a book about the TRUE origins of both subcultures will be highly accepted among teenagers, and will keep them well informed (and will teach them how the first punks will shot themselves upon learning they are called the same as Blink 182).

Without wishing to sound too critical, but if you're targeting a market but don't know what to write about, maybe you should be looking at a different market? Or just not writing?

When I say Goth (and everyone else I know) we mean Gothic, like All Hallows Evey, Victorian Freakshow Spiders Web kind of Gothic.

I agree with you that Tim Burton is exceptionally amazingly brilliANT!

And I love him for al the reasons listed and many more. My brothers got it for my Christams Pressie when It first came out! I was definetly too young to appreciate in but due to it coming back infashion I dug it back out again and now I love it!

it depends on what kind of teenage girl you want to appeal to. If you want to appeal to punk, emo, goth... then hot topic, music, anything going against the crowd would be your niche.
If your going towards a preppier audience...pop,rap, fashion, make-up, dating tips, popularity would be how you would want to go.
