Where do you write?

What is your writing set up? Do you write at the kitchen table or in the living room with the TV on? Do you work at as desk or lying in bed with your laptop? I am trying to clear off my desk that hasn't been used in years to make a designated spot for writing, but years of papers and what not are cluttering it right now.

Do you have a spot where you always write or do you move around? Does having a designated spot or lack of affect your writing? Just wondering what you all think.

I write mainly at my desktop, on my desk, which faces a blank wall. As few distractions as I could arrange.

I tell myself I'll take the laptop somewhere and write, but even in another room, it rarely goes as well as it does here. Out in public? Forget it. I'm all good intentions, no follow-through.

I write all my first drafts by hand.

I get really distracted by my laptop, and also in my apartment, that I need to go out to a coffee shop or a park or the library or some place where there are other people around.

I also can only write in really crappy, cheap notebooks. Otherwise, I feel too pressured to write something worthwhile for my first draft!

When I write my second draft, I do so on my laptop, usually at home. Having gotten the first draft out of the way, I am a lot more focused.

Laptop. Always the laptop. That's actually what I should be doing right now, but, instead, I have a notepad and a pen beside me trying to jot down notes for some backstory while the cursor blinks at me, waiting to be transformed into a wall of descriptive text. I, too, get easily distracted; that's why I'm on the message board right now haha. And ninety-nine percent of the time, I am in my bed, writing away. But for this special occasion, I am sitting here at the kitchen table.

Pretty much everywhere.

But I have a preference for my room, especially my big comfy bouncy chair and my desk. Mostly the desk if I'm also doing graphics work.

I write at my desk in my room. Occasionally, I'll take my laptop to a coffee shop near my house to write, or I'll take my laptop to the library and write there.

On my laptop in the living room with the tv blaring and three little angels running around

(unless its nighttime when they are in the bed-- then just the tv on).

In fact, this evening I was editing and just had to stop. Because my daughters were watching Barbie Fashion Designer-- and it was actually pretty good lol

I mostly write sitting on the couch, or the floor sometimes. Sitting at a desk reminds me of essay-writing, so even when I have a desk around I don't really use it.

I write at work, my boss doesn't mind. Yep, I'm spoiled. I work overnight shift in a residential facility. So I sit in the hallway surrounded by snoring teenage boys, and I write on my laptop. So you could say I get paid to write, LOL!

At my desk in my office using my laptop. I get the most done if the boyfriend isn't home, but when he is, I shut the door to attempt to block out the annoying noise of the television. I need it quiet, and I seem to get more written when it's dark outside and have only my desk lamp on.

I write my poetry and occassionally my flash fiction pretty much anywhere, using a pencil and paper. Everything else I use my lap top, either in my office or the living room.

I tend to write the best when I get out of the house. I like Panera becuase it's just busy and big enough for me to not feel awkward about sitting there for hours. (I tried a coffee shop once, I was the only one there accept the employees. I didn't stay long)

It forces me to focus on the computer. No TV, or dog, or family around to take my mind from my story.

I usually do the bulk of my writing at home, in my office. I have a fairly comfortable chair and a stand for my laptop. I turn on a lamp in the corner, keeping the room dimly lit and settle down to write with a hot beverage.

From time to time I'll head out to a coffee shop or library to break up the monotony. I don't tend to get as much work done in those settings, though. It used to be that I couldn't seem to write if I wasn't in a public space, but I've grown accustomed recently to writing in a nice, quiet office-- with the door closed, of course.

@Tromboli: Panera used to be one of my favorite haunts. I went there the other morning to try and get some writing done, and ended up sitting around for four hours, surfing the web and eating like $20 worth of pastries. Needless to say, I don't think I'll be doing much writing at Panera in the future.

I'm very lucky. I have a whole room that my husband helped me turn into an office. Computer, big desk with cabinets, a bookcase next to it, printers, file cabinets, a window with a pleasant view of my front yard. That's where I write.

Also, I much rather write at night. Usually from 9:00 PM until midnight, although, today, I got about five hundred words done at around 3:30 this afternoon. I think I will see if I can bang out another 1500 words in a little bit.

Right here:

This is a view of the desk in my office, tucked away in front of a fireplace at the foot of the basement stairs. It's just two old farm tables pushed together, with a filing cabinet filling out part of the back corner, but it works. I also hung an enormous whiteboard on the wall directly behind the desk where I can draw up the outline for whatever chapter it is I'm working on at the time. It's quiet, warm in the winter and cool in the summer, and just close enough to all the activity in the house that I don't feel I'm missing much, but don't get all the noise.

It's also a mess.

I usually write at my desk at work. If I'm not at work, I have a desk in the corner of my basement I usually work in. If I'm at home, I crank up the tunes. I can't focus if I leave the TV on though. The conversations distract me.

At my desk in the corner, no t.v., no radio. But the story doesn't come to me at my desk. I get that in bits and pieces while driving, sleeping, showering or walking the dogs. It feels more like transcription of all that that happens at the computer.

Doesn't really matter. I have a desk with a computer, but I also have a netbook. I've written at lunch time at work; written at the autobody shop; written at the doctor's office.

I like dining room tables.

Considering I haven't had a decent one in a few years that's actually comfortable to sit at, I've been sitting in one of those circular, half-sphere Asian chairs with the wooden bases in my living room. It faces out the back porch to the trees, so very serene for writing.

in my the 'office' part of my room, on the back porch or in the living room, depending on the time of day, or with pencil and paper in a coffee shop. I can work ok in a coffee shop unless there are either of two sound problems - the music is too loud, or there's a certain kind of speaker, the kind with the penetrating voice (who talks - and talks - while their friend does all the listening.) When the penetrating voice shows up I get very cross about everything.

I write wherever I can. If I'm at home, I use my laptop, at work I have a notebook that I use.

I have considered the whole 'writing in seclusion without distractions' thing, but unfortunately I have cats and that isn't going to happen. I'm not about to lock them out of my room just because I want to write. I <3 my kitties ^__^d

I don't really have a place of my own I can really write in at my house. I write in my bedroom, but it doesn't have the right sort of energy that allows for writing. That could be because I am unorganized or maybe because I do all my sleeping/media consumption there.

I have considered going up to my attic to write, but the temperature is always in the distracting extremes.

I write with my laptop, therefore I write wherever my laptop happens to be at the time I want to write. Usually its on my desk (at school) or my bed (at home, for I have no desk there). But, occasionally, I get a spark in class, too.
