I apologize for the clunky question, but I did not want to spam threads. I hope this is okay.

I have a fondness for world building. The brands that appear in my drawings are recurrent and I have a lot of fun with the designs and logos and such.

The other day, during one of my bouts of impulse writing, I had a character mention one of those brands. Meanwhile, another character, roughly in the same time window, but across town was thinking about the same brand. Note that it was in dialogue and that these characters are quite close. On the second instance, the second character was actually thinking about the first.

One more thing: The characters were both in the proximity of a brand store.

Now, the questions are:

1- Does name dropping a brand, even if fictional, sound clunky and unnecessary, or does it serve well, both for building and characterization?

2- Do two characters, even if very close and with somewhat similar thought patterns, thinking about the same thing in different locations sound odd or perhaps ridiculous?

I would post the segment, but I'm not sure if that would be allowed in this forum section.

I don't mind when people namedrop brands, be they real or fictional. People really eat at certain restaurants, shop a certain stores, and drive certain cars. I don't see why fictional characters shouldn't be allowed to.

As for the characters thinking of the same thing at the same time, it sounds like it might come off a little "cute," which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

That's... really a bit too vague to tell.

As long as it makes sense that both characters would be thinking of it at the same time, I don't see why it should be a problem.

The brand is fine. The simultaneity depends on how it's written. You couldn't ignore it.

Oh, God, it was a Mamajo shoe store. How could she not take ten minutes to go in? She always wore--

"--Mamajo shoes. She always wears them," said Denise. "Haven't you ever noticed?"

Fictional brands are fine. Most brands mentioned in books are as good as fictional to me anyway.

I think it depends on what it is. But it happens quite often that I think of something, and call a friend and mention it, and that friend says, "I was just thinking about that the other day."
