Can anyone help me with a Hotmail problem? I can get into it and see what email I have but I get a 'error on page' message at the bottom of the screen and can't open anything. This only happens when I'm at work. The last thing I want to do each evening is spend an hour clearing a backlog of email.

I've tried clearing my history and signing in again, but no joy.

Besides your history, do you clean out you cache and cookies?

Yep. It's been happening off and on for a couple of weeks, but worked once I went to another site, then back to hotmail. Now it's just showing me the page after signing in but goes no further.

It could be a script error.

Are you using IE?

Have you tried another browser?

Yeah, it's IE. Unfortunately, I can't use another browser - have to be higher up than me to install anything. The strange thing is I just tried logging into a different machine and no sites work at all on that one. Could it be a building wide glitch?

What are you doing on hotmail when you're supposed to be working!?
Sez me, posting from work...

Mr Popular, huh? ;)

According to this, anti-virus software can interfere with hotmail. Or maybe your company changed the settings on what sites you're allowed to view?

Try turning on Compatibility View. It should be on the toolbar. The icon sort of looks like a torn sheet of paper.

That wouldn't really explain why Hotmail works sometimes and sometimes not, but it's worth a try.

Cheers. Will give it a go.

FWIW, I just tried it on a third machine and it worked. Stupid internet.

If you're a particularly devious person, you could probably get the IT guy to install Firefox in addition to IE. Don't ask directly; the answer to that is always no, followed by an explanation they pull out of their ass. Arrange it so the IE person thinks it's his or her brilliant idea.

You could probably install FF yourself, if you wanted to take the risk.

Thanks for the tip, Jimmy, but I have to be careful with downloading and installing anything. The walls have ears. And the hills have eyes. And so on.

Nah, they just want you to think that. Anyway, the link I gave is for the portable version of firefox, which you install to a USB stick. It doesn't install on your computer at all, has no registry entries, nothing on the hard drive - it's all on the stick. You can even download it at home, bring the USB stick to work and run it from there. Nothing has to touch your work PC.

I like my idea better. It should go something like this:

You: I was talking to a friend last night. He said you can't have two browsers on your computer at the same time.

IT guy: That's not true! You can have multiple browsers.

You; Well, he said everyone should always use Internet Explorer; that all the other browsers are junk.

IT guy: He's an idiot! I use Firefox at home, it's a much better browser [here he goes in to a long discussion of browser functionality that you don't have to listen to, just nod appreciatively].

You: Really? [look impressed at the IT guy's knowledge]

IT guy: Yeah, I've been thinking about loading Firefox on all the computers here. I just haven't had time lately [sighing as though he was the most overworked guy in the world] because everyone is always wanting me to help them with their computer.

You: [look concerned] Are you sure you can do that?

IT guy: Hell yeah! I'm going to do it at lunchtime today.

You: I'll have to straighten my friend out. Thanks.

IT guy: [pretending to be modest] It's nothing. When you know as much about computers as I DO you just know these things.

You: Wow.

IT guy: [goes back to chatting up the new secretary]

A cunning plan. ;)

I was just making a suggestion.
