I wish that Blogger had a feature that notified someone who comments on my blog that I've responded to his/her comment. And vice versa. It would be totally voluntary - just a little button that says "would you like to be notified of comments to this thread?" or "would you like to be notified of replies to your comment?" - and then gave someone the option of posting a comment to a comment or just to the general comments thread.

grr. It's one of the things I really like about LJ that it has that type of a feature.

Rant over. Any other thoughts on comments/responses as a conversation?

(the backstory here is that I got a nice comment and I commented back in my own thread but I wonder if the original commentor saw my response - there's no way of knowing unless you remember all the places you commented and go back to them frequently. And I haven't figured out how to do that effectively either. I'm so sick of Excel at the end of a work day there's no way I want to keep a spreadsheet...there has to be a better way)

hmmm. I get notified about comments on my own blog - so let me be more clear with an example.

I posted a comment on your blog. I won't know if you responded unless I go back to that post and check the comments. If you've posted a couple new ones I may forget which post I commented in so I have to check all of them.

I don't get notified if someone responds to my comment left in another person's blog - but I do get that kind of notice in Live Journal (LJ)

Looks pretty generic. Can't see any particular benefit from what they're offering (EDIT: Found the weblog tool - it's still going)

If you're going to go with a hosted solution, always go with one of the big players that offer the following two features: a reliable service, and a way of moving your posts. Trust me when I say that you do NOT want to end up copy-and-pasting them across by hand, and chances are, you don't want the company disappearing and taking all your blog writing with you.

It's no use in this specific case, but quite a few blogging engines automatically create RSS feeds for individual posts, so people can subscribe to them in their web browser/mail client/RSS reader (in increasing order of technical proficiency, which is an important factor if you're not writing for a tech-savvy audience).

I don't use that myself, although I could, but instead a two-tiered system - if you register an account, you get an 'Email me responses to this thread' option at the bottom of the screen. This makes it possible for people to keep up with the chat, while stopping idiots from putting in random strangers' e-mail addresses (registration requires you to click a confirmation button when the email arrives)

I agree that Blogger needs that kind of feature. The closest I've been able to come to it is to set it so that when someone comments, the comment gets e-mailed to me. THen in addition to posting my reply to the comment, I e-mail it to them, too. Now, sometimes this doesn't work and it bounces back with "[email protected]" or something like that.

I just went through all the Firefox extensions/add ons on their site and didn't see anything helpful. I asked my SO if he thought he could come up with something but he can't. :( - so I'm writing Blogger, it may take me a bit to compose it. Meanwhile, the addy I'm going to use (if you want to write them) is [email protected]
