I want to write

For years, I've dabbled a bit in writing, finishing a few short stories and getting partway through some novels, but really talking about it more than doing it. Over the same period, my mom would talk about how she wanted to get into painting. In a recent discussion with her, I paraphrased some advice I've seen on a lot of writing blogs, and told her "If you want to be a painter, you have to actually paint things."

I guess she doesn't waste as much time on the internet as I do, because a few weeks later she had bought some acrylics and painted a dozen pictures, and told me that was the first time she'd heard something like that and it completely inspired her. Of course, for my part I was just repeating wisdom I'd seen many times and completely ignored.

So now I'm going to be inspired by her in turn, and actually heed that advice. If I want to be a writer, I have to actually write. So that's what I'm going to do.

Welcome to the water cooler!

Such problems are commonplace among aspiring writers, so don't be discouraged.

I love it! Here is one that a playwright friend recently passed on to me:

"You want to be a writer, don't know how or when? Find a quiet place, use a humble pen." (Paul Simon)

Welcome! That's such an inspiring story. I found myself thinking the same thing during a recent visit to San Francisco. I was walking along fishermans warf and there are artists waiting on the sidewalks asking you if you'd like for them to draw your portrait and I was admiring one lady's display and it suddenly hit me, like wow, all of these drawing are equivalent to my screenplays. She had to actually draw and finish her drawings in order to be able to show them to others and prove to them that she is, in fact, an artist. It really put things into prospective for me.

That's so cool! I actually live near San Francisco, and I love watching the painters at Fisherman's Wharf...I'm sure nothing helps you get better at art like having your livelihood depend on it.

Welcome to AW. Hope you enjoy your stay with us.
How do you like your popcorn?

If you go to the bottom of the page to the 'forum jump' you can scroll down and find all the areas of this place. After you post 50 posts you can use the SYW areas to get help there. The password for some of the areas is…..vista. A word to the wise, it would be a good idea to participate first in helping others before you think about posting your own work. After you have been around here for awhile, then post something of your own for help. Good luck.

Welcome to the boards geofish. Loved the story. Sitting down and starting to write can be one of the hardest steps, but you can do it!

There is no better karma than listening to your mom. Get at it.

Welcome, geofish.

It's true, "writers write." That's the first principle, the rest tends to follow.

Set up a writing schedule and concrete writing goals and stick to them as much as possible. That's half the battle won!
