Can someone recommend a newish science fiction novel that puts a new twist on something generic. I would like it third person, if possible. I don't care if it mixes fantasy with it just as long as science is the driving force of the book.

Mouse and Dragon by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller, although I'd recommend reading Scout's Progress, one of their earlier books, first. For more hardcore, less fantasy, science fiction, Karen Traviss's City of Pearl was an excellent read, rooted more in the world of practical physics.
