I think it would make a great movie. What process do I need to go through to get permission to turn it into a script?

Contacting the publisher would probably be a good start. They can define which rights they own and the author owns, and whether anyone is willing to sell you the adaptation rights.
Just for fun's sake, and if you haven't already done so, check imdb.com and see if a film is already being made (if it's such a good book, maybe you're not the only person who thinks this way?), check the author's site, the publisher's site, Google the title and author, etc. You never know what info you might turn up.

If you don't mind saying, what's the title? I'm always looking for a great book.
Maryn, who's no competition, believe me

lol. No problem. It's titled "Clay's Ark". It's more science fiction but not what you'd expect.

Thanks. I'm not familiar with it (no surprise) but it looks interesting. I see it's pretty highly rated at Amazon, where I keep a wish list (even though I try to buy locally).
BTW, there's a thread on getting book rights on IMDb's Shop Talk Writers board, here (http://imdb.com/board/bd0000019/nest/31638682).

Why not invest in the book: The Art of Adaptation: turning Fact and Fiction into Film buy Linda Seger. It tells youall the ins and outs of aquiring rights, as well as how to actually go about the adaptation. I found it great. Oh, and Linda Seger is wonderful too, I met her a couple of years ago!
