I happened to come across a photographer who has a number of pictures that would work very well as covers for a trilogy I have planned. I'm not exactly sure how to approach him, or what a fair price would be. Would appreciate any input!

You don't have to come forward with a number. You could explain what you need the photos for, including expected circulation and size of the demographic you expect the reprint to reach. The photographer will get back with you to negotiate price range and contract details if the individual is interested. There is no guarantee that you will ever hear back, of course.

I'd do what Gale said. The photographer should be able to give you a price quote if the pictures are available to be used. Or it's possible they may give you commision info.
