Goodreads?

Hi all! Just wondering who in our group is on Goodreads. I'm at: http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/1325839.S_Kelley_Harrell Do you guys use it much? It's become a good way to connect directly with readers.

My books are on there, but I'm not. I suppose it could be a good way to connect with readers. But I've often found that reviewers of a book really don't want the input of the author on what they thought about the book. Have seen too many fights (or at least bad feelings) come of it.

I use it just to find new things to read. It comes in handy when I can't figure out what to sink my teeth into next.

Both of my e-books are listed there (see titles in my sig below) and some of my friends (Net and otherwise) have already bookmarked them/bought them for future reading. I think it's a good way to get your product out there and at least get noticed.

Mostly I use it to keep track of what all I've read. I'd like to participate more, but I can participate...or I can work. That's just how it is at the moment.

I'm also seeing Amazon kind of shoving people onto Shelfari, which I think may directly affect GoodReads soon.

My books are on Goodreads, but I stay clear of the readers. The fights authors and readers get into can be savage, and the temptation to respond to a reader is always there. The thing is, a writer, has a public face, and a stake in the out come.No so the reader. No one wins.

The 'meet the author' forum can be useful, I suppose. I've never wanted to meet an author before, maybe Venerable Bede, but I'll have to wait for that.

I have an author page on Goodreads, and I log on at least once a week to add reviews and update my reading list.

But I don't read reviews of my own books. Amazon, or maybe Carina, goofed up and listed my full name for author name, so my latest book doesn't even pop up in my profile. I kinda see it as a blessing, since it frees me from the temptation to read reviews or worry about how many people added my book.

As others have noted, the kerfuffles between readers and authors have sometimes gotten ugly, so I approach Goodreads as a reader, not an author.

Since they created the Droid app that lets you scan books in, I have to admit it's very gratifying. Although I read a book this weekend printed before the advent of bar codes!
