I want to publish a short story to amazon/kindle. But I also want to publish the same short story to B&N pubit, and smashwords. All I can find on amazon publishing is kdp (kindle direct program). Can anyone tel me how to publish to amazon without using KDP?

You can publish via kdp and still publish to other venues like B&N, etc. Just make sure you opt out of the kdp select program when publishing your book on Amazon.

Currently, the only way to get a book on Kindle is to use Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP). Smashwords has been in negotiations with Amazon for over a year, but it seems they are no closer to establishing an agreement. As Izz said, make sure you do not sign your book up for the new Select program, as there is an exclusivity clause for 90 days.

And when you publish on Smashwords, opt-out of the channels to which you are publishing directly (Kindle and PubIt).
As others have said, you can publish with Amazon and still publish with smashwords so you can cover all your bases, so to speak.
