Agent Query and Query Tracker are the most comprehensive sources (Though, if you're querying agents, you shouldn't be sending to publishers, too. You'll use up the places they can sub to.)

Are you sending to YA agents, fantasy agents, both?

Haha I made a thread just like this. What everyone said is basically there are a lot less YA agents and so 30-40 is more normal.

Check out the literary rambles blog. Any YA agent worth subbing to is listed there along with likes, dislikes, query guidelines and quotes. It's a great resource.

I can't really find many publishers open to submissions, except for the one that is open to YA submissions in May. So I've mostly been sending to agents, and only ones that say they are specifically looking for YA fantasy. Is it okay to send to agents who just list fantasy but no YA? Or if they say YA, but don't go into detail about what YA they are looking for? What if they say they are looking for YA and give a specific list - contemporary, paranormal, historical - and fantasy isn't in there? Is it worth a shot to send them a YA fantasy anyway?

I also admit since I live in Canada I tend to shy away from American/foreign publishers/agents that use snail mail and require a SASE / IRC. It gets expensive. But I guess it could be worth it in the end.

I avoided snail mail too and subbed to 30ish agents. And if they say they take YA, assume they take all genres of it unless otherwise specified. Lots of agents don't take adult fantasy, but take YA fantasy.

There's no harm in trying. The worst you'll get is a rejection, and everyone gets those anyway.

I think people would say to check out duotrope...haven't queried in ages so not sure if it's still one that is used.

If they say YA, they usually mean all genres of YA unless they say otherwise. And I'm in Canada too, and I've subbed to 20ish agents all through email. Most take email queries nowadays, especially YA agents, who are usually really up on technology.
