I have a couple of publishers in mind, but would like to check them out first. What are the best sites for doing this?

I would check http://www.pred-ed.com/

They are an independent research website.

Also, search this part of AW--Bewares, Recommendations and Background Checks. You'll find a lot of help here.

I would also take a look at Piers Anthony's site, PiersAnthonyInternetPublishing. He's pretty honest IMHO and his site is an invaluable resource for new writers out there.

You're on it. Open the Index thread stickied at the top and search for the name. Click the link and read up on the publisher. If the thread doesn't exist, start one. Make the thread title something like John Smith Publishing or [Publisher] John Smith Services. (If the fact that it's a publisher isn't obvious).

The index (http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=792). Use your browser's "search" function to find the publisher you're interested in.

I use them all the time, but they (and everyone) is having trouble keeping up with e-publishers as they pop up. I have better luck on those here.

OTOH I wouldn't think of dealing with an agent or print publisher without checking them out at P & E. And here of course.

Thanks, P&E is a good one. Not only in rating publishers but with all sorts of other valuable info as well. I was checking out their recent readers poll and wonder what folks here think about it? I've bookmarked the Piers Anthony site as well. And the Index on this site is really great!
