i would like to know your opinion on whether having a character that is both the head of a police forensics department and the medical examiner would ruin your suspension of disbelief?
Some jurisdictions feel that would likely constitute an inherent conflict of interest. Generally speaking, a medical examiner is an MD with a specialty in forensic pathology.
OTOH, a coroner may be an elected (or sometimes appointed) official who may or may not have any background in medicine. If there are no forensic pathologists on his/her staff, post mortem exams are typically contracted out.
