Would This Be Overdoing It?

I'm planning on having a character in a story that I've started working on work as a manga editor/writer at publishing house. However, the genre she's working in is hentai, which is essentially erotica. Since, this story is probably going to be something close to erotica, if not erotica. Would this be "pushing it"? I mean it's an erotica story where the characters(her love interest also works there) work essentially as erotica writers/editors. And for another story, I was thinking about having a character that was an actual erotic author.

Has anyone else had a character work as an erotica editor/writer in their stories?

Do you have any idea how many H manga and anime there are out there in which the heroines are H manga/anime/game artists who are having trouble drawing realistically because they've never seen the real thing, until some kind male sees their poor efforts and decides to give them some much-needed "inspiration" and experience? If not, I can send some your way, if necessary.

My only question would be is a I wonder how many erotica readers would have any idea what hentai or manga is.

Well, this story is kind like "for fun". I was going to post it online. (I am so not ready to publish). As for them knowing it, since it's a genre she wasn't aiming for, I was planning to have a little "rant" inside her head. (She was hoping to get into shounen, not shounen-ai, but shounen. However, they placed here where they needed her, i.e. H-manga.)

And I no, I didn't know there were some like that.

I mean I didn't think that this was a "new idea", but it's like your writing erotica about an erotica author. It sounded like a good idea and slightly awkward at the same time. That's why I wanted to ask before I wrote/brain stormed more. I just wanted to make this is wasn't an unwritten "things-you-shouldn't-do".

I used to be huge into hentai >.> Though I've never wrote a story similar to this. I tend towards fantasy, for the most part.

I think it's a neat idea and a great way to challenge yourself. The lines between romance/erotic romance/erotica are getting blurryer(yes, it's a word) so I wouldn't worry too much about what to classify it. Write the story first and then you can take a look at it as a whole and figure out where it fits. Oh and worrying about writing erotica about an erotica author, I've seen it alot and just like anything else the story hinges on the skill of the person writing it.

PS- Many 'mainstream' readers may not be hip to the whole tentacle sex thing that seems to be everywhere in Hentai today.

PSS- auto-correct wanted to change tentacle to testicle. Nice visual. ;)

I guess my concern would be that readers might think it was based more on RL. A Mary Sue of sorts. Like the way I rolled my eyes when it turned out M. Night Shamalayan's character in Lady in the Water was a misunderstood artist destined for assassination.

Just saying.

I suspect more than you think.

Perhaps. Maybe it's just that I've had to explain the terms I use so often in here.

Yeah, I just meant it wasn't that weird.

Btw, I don't think shounen-ai tends to be very explicit, and tends to focus more on the emotional arc, whereas straight-up yaoi would have the sex scenes. At least that's how I see it labeled around the sites I frequent. But maybe you were just making a pun? :)

I was trying to be funny, and it seems I have failed.

Thanks for the responses guys.

As far as the Mary Sue/Self-Insert thing, I think I will be able to pull this off without making coming off that way. That's just my opinion though. I could be dead wrong. (I don't make my heroines the "most beautiful creatures ever" or "perfect".) I'm not a fan of the self-insert/Sue/Stu at all.

Wasn't meaning to imply you were, just that in any creative endeavor you sometimes have to watch for that. I avoid writing about film-makers/film-students/authors/artists because I don't want anyone thinking (however mistakenly) "Oh, this is supposed to be her."

Aggy, writes MCs who could NEVER be mistaken for her

I think the 'real life reference' thing could be cute and tongue in cheek if done in a 'meta' way.

I think it might be fun and a bit fitting to add a bit of light humour into it, anyways.
