Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (US Version)

I can't imagine it was better than the book, but I am VERY excited to see this movie. I didn't like the last 50-100 pages of the book so I'm worried the last 15-20 minutes will be not that great. But either way I'm seeing it next week with my girlfriend.

I'm interested in this because I loved the Swedish movie. I just don't think I can take anyone else as Lisbeth, though. Noomi Rapace was breathtaking in the Swedish original.

Fincher is my favourite director. You bet your sweet arse I'll be all over this.

I'm going to see it this Friday. Looking forward to it! (despite not having read the book)

That's the reason I'm NOT going to see the remake. Besides, what's the deal with doing a remake less than two years after the original's release? The average US moviegoer can't deal with translations?

Because it was done in another language I assume that's the biggest reason. Plus there is no way Hollywood would not go after such a popular book to try and make money.

I hope they make a) money and b) do a good rendition of the book. It would be a shame to add this movie to the long string of bad remakes Hollywood made out of European movies.

I think, like with Let The Right One In, this isn't a remake of a European movie, but a movie based on a book. Now, yes, it was already done in the proper language and in the proper country initially, but that doesn't mean that Fincher isn't going to do a good job with this. I wouldn't compare it to the previous film, though it might be impossible not to, I would compare it to the book.

In any case, I hear that Rooney Mara is fantastic, and just because one actress was amazing doesn't mean another can't be too.

I'm really uncomfortable with the idea of another version so soon after the original Swedish films, which were superb. It seems a little bit...I don't know, 'too lazy to read subtitles'-ish. And I loved Noomi Rapace as Lisbeth, so it might be hard to take to someone else as her. The soundtrack sounds good, though.

Everyone I've talked to know the Swedish movie exists.

And most of the folks I talk to honestly don't care. I hate when movies like this come out because some of my "purist" friends will begin whining something awful about how it could never live up to the ORIGINAL deal.

You pretty much get used to tuning those people out, though. That's the good thing.

If I want to see the US version too, I'll go see it. If I don't, I won't. I got my grown-up pants on. For my pals who are literally having seizures over an American remake, I'm sure they can write a letter to the studio and tell them "how dare you." Maybe they'll give a crap.

Went and saw it Friday. It was outstanding. Love the soundtrack and RM as LS. I was a little skittish about her after seeing Noomi Rapace do such a great job in the Swedish film but she was excellent.

Overall, a very entertaining and well done movie. Can't wait to see the 2nd one.

i did not like it at all. Like....at all. They changed a good bit of it and made Cecilla absolutely useless in the movie which is a shame because she added to the story.

Finally got to see it today. Gritty but enjoyable, if you can stomach some of the scenes. I haven't read the book or seen the Swedish, I'll probably check out both now.

I haven't read the book but I'm kind of ishy on seeing the movie. I really don't deal well with rape being portrayed in movies/tv. I'm really kind of worried that I might not be able to handle it so I'm thinking of waiting until it comes out on video so if I get squeamish I can fastforward through it.

Apparently in the Swedish version, RAINN said it was really well done in regards to realism, and that kind of makes me think I can't handle it.

If anyone has thoughts on this, I'd appreciate it, because I'd love to see it... I just don't want to leave feeling ill.

This sounds interesting. Now I've found out that a neighbour likes the books, so maybe we'll go see the film together.

I saw the American version of Girl With a Dragon Tattoo recently. I have to say it was in no way better than the original. As a matter of fact, I went to see it with my girlfriend and as we were leaving she said the exact same thing I had been thinking:

It was soulless.

I'm not sure if the major problem was the direction or the editing. I suspect the editing. It felt disjointed and just didn't do nowhere near as good a job telling the story as the original did.

There were lots of things that would've confused me if I hadn't seen the original or read the book. A lot of the motivation of the characters was left out (causing it to feel sorry and for my girlfriend and I do not care at all about the characters) and many things were unexplained or not properly foreshadowed.

And even the acting (and the casting decisions) were far superior in the original. Watch the original and watch Lisbeth and you'll see a different character. A fully fleshed one. Noomi Rapace's acting was stellar. Every action had subtext. Every scene showed her emotions under the surface as well as the struggle within her and her internal tension.

We went home and re-watched the original and man, it was so much better done. The story was clear, the acting was better and more realistic, and the story was gripping throughout. The American version was very slow at times and we found ourselves slightly bored at times – something that definitely didn't' happen with the original.

If you saw the American one, do yourself a favor and watch the original and see how the story was supposed to be shown.
