Thanks for the heads-up, c.m.n. I'm not familiar with them at all. But hey, that happens with new sites, duh.

Maryn, kind of dense

Silver-Midnight, if you've had it online it's been "published." Do they accept stories which have been previously published? I forget; I looked at guidelines for a few yesterday and my brain scrambles their requirements.

You want to be sure you follow their rules, whatever they are. If you enter, good luck!

Maryn, fingers crossed

Password protected writing forums (like the SYW) do not usually count as "published". However, personal blogs (even if password protected) do. Any other type of online presence - Facebook, Yahoo Groups, Deviant Art, etc - (especially if not password protected) does.

At least, this has been my understanding.

I'm glad they pushed back the deadline. I've got enough time to rework an old story that will fit with this.

As per their rules:

"All submissions must contain original material, and may not have been previously published, accepted for publication, or have been a winner in another contest prior to the Dec 5th, 2011 deadline."

But, as Aggy said, a password protected forum like SYW and other critique sites, that require a password, do not count as published.

I didn't know that writing sites/forum counted, but okay. I understand now. Well, there's always next time I guess. I don't think that I will be able to come up something before the deadline.

In general, it's not a good idea to post creative work in a non-password protected internet anything (forum, website, Facebook, etc). Apparently the Google bots can get to it without a password and this is bad.

There are a few magazines that do NOT consider posting a story on a personal blog to be publication, but they are rapidly dwindling.

Why is it bad for the bots to get it? I already know that some people can steal my work and claim it as their own, but what else?

It means a bunch of people could have seen it and could continue to see it. Publishers generally want stuff you can't easily get for free from google cache.
