I have never read a book that has vampires in it and for some reason I have absolutely no interest in doing so. I enjoy all kinds of other fantasy. I am starting to think I am being silly and obsessive, but whenever I read a synopsis or blurb that contains the word vampire I just stop and move on to something else. Am I alone in this?

Maybe it's because of Twilight? Try Dracula (Bram Stoker's version of course). If you still don't like vampires then, maybe you just... don't like them? :) I'm not that into warewolves, myself.

How about I am Legend? That's a bit of a zombies/vampire cross (FYI, the book's nothing like the movie).

And it's ok to have varying tastes. I've never been big on classic dragon tales, but that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with me or wrong with dragons.

I recommend Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice if you want to dip your toes in the bloody puddle. (;))

But hey, everyone's allowed their own preferences. Maybe vampires just aren't your thing? I would say it's a good idea to try before you completely make up your mind though.

Incidentally, if you can get hold of Freda Warrington's vampire sequence, try them. Best vampire books ever. They're out of print so you might have to go on eBay. A Taste of Blood Wine, A Dance in Blood Velvet and The Dark Blood of Poppies.Absolutely superb, all of them.

I agree with trying before giving up. :) However, I'm speaking as a Twilight fan. Just because you don't like them, does not mean there is anything wrong with you.

A lot of people say they like vampires, but I think the question that needs to be asked is - would you really want your daughter to marry one?

Your personality determines what sort of stories resonate with you and what sort of experiences you enjoy. It's entirely possible that the concept of a vampire doesn't tweak anything in your subconscious.

I don't like horror because I don't enjoy feeling scared. I don't care about vampires because I view them as creatures of pure selfishness, and that doesn't strike me as attractive.

So yeah, you're definitely not alone. :)

If Edward Cullen were a real person/vampire, she and I would be fighting. ;) Just kidding!

And I'm only speaking on how he is personally (or his character), not the looks.

I can understand not reading about vampires. I read afewsuch stories years ago, but those were about people sucking the life out of others; they were non-erotic. I think that the more recent vampire stories are absurd to the point of being inane.

Do you mind! I wrote a vampire story!

Available from all good ebook retailers, and its publisher, Loose Id. A Little Death -- just what your Kindle's been waiting for.

I think my issue with those "vampire" stories is that they're calling an apple an orange. These books portray vampires in a way that is entirely not vampiric whatsoever, and those who read them think that is what a vampire is. Make up a new breed of benevolent monsters if you want, but don't give them the title of a group that already exists in myth and lore.

I'm somewhere between Morgan and Scarlet's viewpoint on this. Probably the best Eastern-European vampire sequence I've ever read would be Chelsea Quinn-Yarbro's 'Saint-Germain' novels. I love a good vampire story, don't get me wrong. But I'm far more inclined to think of vampires as vermin or predators, rather than a love-interest.

There's a lot that can be done with the genre still, and I wouldn't drag any writer away from trying it if she or she wanted to. But I'd beg them to read more than Charlaine Harris and Anne Rice.

I also want to see more vampires from other cultures, because I'm an anthropology student -- and there are some strange and crazy monsters in many other myths.

I have to agree with Morgan & Fil. Acceptable vampire stories do exist. Stoker, Yarbro, Ann Rice and such. I'll even say that much of the Buffy/Angel series was good (IMHO), but that was mostly due to a stellar cast, Joss Whedon, and good writing -- if the cast didn't click or the stories didn't work, it would have been staked & buried. But there's also a glut of sickening love-puppy stuff that's just embarrassing. Like anything else that just gets copied over and over until it loses all meaning. I'm not sure I can ever read another vampire thing without retching. Your mileage may vary.

There are so many different kinds of vampire stories you're bound to find something that holds your interest. But then, seeing as I've been reading supernatural stuff since the The Bailey School Kids and Goosebumps, I might be a little biased. :)

Dracula's a great one to start with. You wouldn't even have to pay for it, since it's out of copyright and on the internet and all.

'Salem's Lot is good, too. I recommend it if you like fantasy because the character/worldbuilding is really thorough (if you've read any of King's other stuff you know what I'm talking about).

Let the Right One In wins the award for creepiest vampire book I've ever read. The movie is equally good (maybe even a little better...I'm pretty sure the author wrote the script).

I'd recommend the YA novel Peeps if you're interested in a scientific approach to the subject. It's pretty funny, too.

You might read Twilight just to know what all the hubbub is about (I actually have a friend who read the whole series for the sole purpose of being able to criticize it...but I figure the fact that she finished them as fast as she did meant she must've found them at least somewhat entertaining :) )

Hmm I feel like this list should be longer...I feel like I've seen more movies/TV shows than books, honestly...Trublood might be worth a look. Daybreakers was cool too, since it's set in a reality where almost everyone's a vampire (both are pretty violent though).

Vampires are really not my thing but if they are involved in a story I have picked up I will still keep reading. However if it involves sparkly undead teenage heartthrobs with fangs that millions of girls get all crazy about... Then yes I am with you against vampires of the Twilight nature.

From television: Forever Knight, from a few years back - a vampire police detective.
Books: The Fred Saberhagen's Dracula stories, starting with 'The Dracula Tapes' - the events from the original book, told from Dracula's POV.

I don't like vampires much, because I'm not into the archetype of the alpha male (or female) who is a violent predator by nature. But I do like comedy vampires. So if you want to give funny vampires a try, check out the family movie The Littlest Vampire.

Sums it up.

Standard fantasy creatures (the vampire being only one example) are symbols, much like words, and they always have a standard meaning.

Onion headline I enjoyed (paraphrased from memory): "MUMMIES! Mummies are the new vampire!" says publisher, desperately wishing mummies were the new vampire.

I don't read books featuring vampires, but I certainly have nothing against them. I like hard science fiction, so there's not much room for supernatural creatures of any kind in the books I choose to read. It all just comes down to taste.

If leprechauns were popular right now, would you be asking the same question about them?

I like vampire novels where the vampire is a believable threat, even when he/she/it is the love interest.

I much prefer my UF/PNR to have a humorous slant (a la Jim Butcher, Nicole Peeler, Kim Harrison, etc) and not take itself too seriously when it involves vampires. Probably why I write them that way. ;)

As mentioned above, if you prefer your vampires to be nasty-grrr-bitey, SALEM'S LOT, I AM LEGEND, and INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE are good places to start. There is also a very dark, gritty, disturbing anthology called UNDER THE FANG (my review here) which was very good.

To give you an idea of where to start if you do want to try reading vampire novels, I suppose it depends on what kind of literature you like to read. Do you like darker fiction? Horror? Humor?
