I didn't quite understand what was going on here, but it seems like they got the "stranded" space probe (stranded in earth orbit) to respond by sending it the kind of signal it would have gotten if it had reached Mars.

So you can imagine the "conversation":
Ground signal: "Hey are you Okay?"
Phobos-Grunt: "If this is Mars then I'm okay."

How do they break the bad news?
