Anyone a Scrivener Expert?? (moved from Roundtable)

Or at least use it a lot? I'm having trouble importing things into it. Whether I import or cut/paste, when I put something into Scrivener, it changes all of my quotation marks into black bars.

Does anyone know what causes that, or if there's a way to stop it from happening? One of the pieces I was trying to do this with was originally copied out of Scrivener, and it looked fine, but when I tried to put it back in, this happened. I've tried .doc and .rtf and it's happened with both. The font is the same as I'm using in Scrivener, so it can't be that it just doesn't like the font.

ETA: I tried to copy and paste the black bars in here, but when I posted this message, it changed them into quotation marks. Of course.

I've never experienced this but I don't import much. Sounds like there's something in the original text that's confusing Scrivener. Try posting a query on the Scrivener discussion board. The tech advisors there are very helpful.

You're using "smart quotes," or printers' quotation marks. Those are high ASCII characters and their function can be very dependent on not just font but on OS and app.

Save as ASCII text/plain text, or convert the quotation marks to "straight" quotation marks within MS Word.

I think Medievalist has it, but you might also try using Paste And Match Style instead of just Paste and seeing if that converts them. It's in the Edit menu, at least on a Mac.
