page numbering in word 2010 help

Mornin,
I am creating a template for a new novel on my new laptop that has Word Starter 2010. I am having a horrible time formatting page numbers where they are consecutive 1, 2, 3...

I have been able to add page numbers but the number 1 keeps coming up on every page I type....

Can someone please refresh my memory on how to make page numbers consecutive even if it's for the normal version of Word 2010 and not Word starter?

It sounds like you're adding a Header of "1" on each page. Go to your top menu and see if there is a "Help" option. If so, search for "add page numbers."

I'm not familiar with Word Starter. I have Word 2011 for Mac, but to add simple consecutive page numbers it should be roughly similar. Go to your top menu and then Insert and then Page Numbers. It usually gives you the option of skipping the first page and on which side/top/bottom to add them. Good luck.

I'm not sure what you're doing to get that effect. If you go to Insert, click Page Number and then choose where you want the page numbers to go, what happens? You should end up with each page numbered starting from 1 at the beginning of the document.

It may be that you're inadvertently adding section breaks - page numbering restarts from 1 after a section break.

Thanks so much guys for responding. I figured out how to do it. For anyone who has this problem here is how to fix for word/word starter 2010.

You have to go to insert, then header/footer/page number, then click on page number and choose what part of the document you want the page number to appear--I chose top, then different styles will appear. I chose top right.
I did leave the number formatting as is --which is, start on page 1.

I am really starting to hate word 2010...the things that should be so simple are turning out to be a pita.....
