I've submitted a story to them (two or three years ago). They are definitely not a vanity press.

They are a well-respected independent publisher. They have adult lines as well, but are biggest in kidlit.

By the way, Charlesbridge, like most traditional children's book publishers who accept non-agented submissions, has a note about "if we're not interested you won't hear back from us" in their guidelines (or they used to; it's been a couple of years since I've submitted anything to them). Some publishers follow this strictly, and some will send a little note back anyway. I'd have to go look, but I believe that was my experience with Charlesbridge; if they're not interested you won't hear a word back from them. As long as that's their stated policy, I'm fine with it and I don't have anything negative to say about them.
