So I've been playing around with an erotic/romantic novel for the past few months. It started as fantasy and then I realized that the relationship between the main characters was both central to the story (making it a romance) and highly erotic. I've been working on this story to get it out of my head, and these two characters have lots and lots of wild sex. I'm sorry, it's just what they do.

But there was first a story, a real story, and that story is not sexual. Can you do that? I am writing this story because on some level I feel that I must, but is there a market for that? Or does the market for explicitly erotic books demand that they also be primarily focused on the erotic?

Thanks in advance for your insights!

My understanding is that most of it is erotic fill in the blank, and that straight erotica is what's harder to sell. I think you're fine. :)

Behind you!
You sure can do that.

Maybe the end product won't be erotic romance, or romantic erotica, but hybrids are allowed, and strong plots highly desirable.

Maryn, pleased to meet you

What Maryn and Fruitbat said. At novel length erotic romance, or erotic _____ , are a much easier sell than straight erotica. Short stories are a different matter.
