I have a story that's set in Milwaukee in a slightly alternate 1927 (women's suffrage passed in the early 1880s and the 1919 Red Scare lasted longer, but otherwise it's pretty much the same as ours). There's a good chance I'm actually moving to Milwaukee in the new year, so a lot of my research I've put off to worry about later.

The thing I am having problems with, though, is that my main character is working on her doctorate at UWM, and I have no idea what that would have entailed. I can find decent resources for general undergrad life in the 1920s, but nothing about what graduate school was like then. Does anyone have any suggestions of where to start looking?

Hm. I had a friend who got his graduate degree from the University of Chicago in 1933.

You could poke around some prominent schools, like the U of Chicago or Northwestern, see if their histories cover that era.
