If someone has a 'jones' for something, what's going on with them? And is this a slang term that is widely known and/or used?
(This is to settle a debate that rattled around my house this weekend. Of course, you people being authorities on all things wordy, the parties have agreed to abide by your decision on the matter.)

Jones - a savage appetite for something, as in 'a jonesing for...'
To be honest, it's one of those words where the context makes it pretty clear even if the person reading doesn't know the slang.
Exactly. I'm jonesin' for some Chocolate Ice Cream right about now! Gotta get me some!

Yes, to jones for something is to need it, like an addiction

funny, I used the term "jonesing" in my blog the other day re: the congregation of folks in the AW Chatroom while AW was migrating - it seemed perfect...

In the 90s, the term was also used in teenage slang to mean having a crush on someone.

Am I the only one old enough to remember the hit song "Basketball Jones" by Cheech & Chong? Or the song "Love Jones" that it parodied?

I always thought this use of "jonesing" came from the phrase "keeping up with the Joneses".

No, it had to do with heroin.

I thought it came from Casey Jones and the Grateful Dead.
Maybe I'd better do my research. :)

We always used it as a craving, like an addiction, and then, just to express how bad we wanted something, we used it to describe other stuff like, I'm jonesin' for a good Hip Hop show right now...

I always thought it was rhyming slang for *ahem* a male man's member.
As it having a bone(r) for something.
