So we've been writing poems back and forth for a bit now and I'm curious about the other poets here on the forums. Why do YOU write poetry?

I chose mixture. I mostly write for pleasure but occasionally I'll write something and decide to sub it.

I'm not sure I can call it pleasure, more like masochism

I voted other... I can allow the words I can't say to come out. Emotion is so hard for me to vocalize, (good or bad) so poetry flows easily from the pencil- err- the keys. :)

Where opinions have a distinct aroma.
OTHER -- because I have to. Sounds corny, but it's true. Call it an obsessive compulsion, self-therapy, and a way to exorcise my demons -- if I don't, my head will explode or something even more terrifying will happen - it will. Publication is a nice bonus.

I haven't written anything in ages but it really is just tops when something pops out! Agreed though as far as it being masochistic.

I chose for pleasure, but I've been published. I really write poetry so I can wear a beret, sunglasses at night AND inside, a turtle neck, and scoff "Ginsburg! Pleeeeeease he is so mainstream!"

Damn...so cool...

OTHER -- because I have to.

Poetry is and has always been the language I feel best expresses me or what I'm thinking. It's about me finding the exact precise perfect word phrase or metaphor that explains what I want to say or what I'm thinking. My favorite poetic moments are those when poetry allows me to put my finger on some elusive thing and give it a shape or a meaning that makes sense to me, almost like the poem allows me to see it clearly.

But lately I've been trying to get more serious and try to master poetry as an art form, which is a frustrating, exciting challenge :)

Great poll!

I'm with Kie on this one. I feel like I have to write poetry--whenever the mood/muse strikes me. I love the language and the nuances that it seems only poetry can express with any sort of reasonableness.

I put other. I write it for word calisthenics...to limber myself up for my prose writing. The publications are just a surprising side effect.

I write poems because it's fun, it's gratifying, and the difference perfect and awful is so elusive, but so strong.

Every time I write a poem, I find something inside that I didn't know was there, and it's always a delight. I never thought I could do it, and I never think I'll be able to do it again.

I love good poetry very much, and bad poetry gives me pain. Poetry needs more good poems to be written, and I hope I can put a few more on the right side of the scales.

Yay, Mr. You! Good answer. I get all giggly over words. I like the word delight. That's another reason I write poetry...for the delight.

I voted "other". I write poetry 1) because I can, and 2) because I have things to say that are better expressed in verse than in prose.

Thank you for the reminder. Although I am not very good at producing it, myself, poetry that is delightful (to me, Blarg, to me) is absolutely necessary, too. "It completes me," har har.

BTW, I loved reading that you found Dr. Seuss an inspiration. His recent revival through my own children has been my most delightful reading, yet.

Speaking of inspirational reading (and Mr. History creeping through the Triolet trees) , I really changed courses from consuming others' books to longing to emanate my own message after reading Orwell's 1984. Not the first time I read it in 8th grade but later, in college (OK, so maybe she was a Mrs. History). I didn't have to write an essay, but instead gave a presentation. Standing up there, it was the first time I (the never-healing beagle) wasn't completely terrified to speak out for something I felt was incredibly important and that everyone read and understand. It made me think that writing and song might actually be synonymous; very impermanent; meant moreover to soothe and--above all--bring truth to our very souls.

[Somebody give me something bitter to drink...]

Precisely! I write it as well because it helps to enrich my descriptions in my prose.

I also write it by accident. Sometimes my short stories just end up as free verse.

none of your business.

I like that answer, really. I forget that one isn't obliged to answer every question. What's more, this is very much an answer in itself.
