Hi, All!

I own a Compaq laptop, and a modest cell phone. Until now, the two fulfilled most of my tech needs. However, I now feel the need to boost my tech kitty. I spend way too much time travelling around the town in search of stories and conducting interviews with sources. I realize I could make better use of my time during transition. For example, when I'm aboard the Metro, I can transcribe interviews, file stories and at least respond to e-mails. However, it's impossible to carry the huge laptop around all the time. I'll probably lose an inch of my petite frame if I keep taking it around all the time.

I've done some preliminary research on portable devices, and here's the convergence of it all:

1) Tablets: I sort of seem fascinated with the iPad and the whole tablet market. It's just the sort of portable thing I could slip into my handbag as I scurry across town. I do realise that typing on the touchscreen will make the business of filing stories sort of difficult. Also, it's a little too expensive - would amount upto INR 50, 000.

2) Smartphones: Maybe I should just purchase one of those smartphones. Again, I seem to like the Apple product over others: it has 3G internet and HD video and a good camera. Kills two birds with one stone - I get Internet access and don't have to saddle my bag with a rather heavy Sony Cybershot.

3) Netbooks: I have a laptop already, so I'm a little reluctant to invest in a similar-looking object, but my brain's left side suggests this might be what I need after all. Since it's smaller, it will be lighter to carry. I still get most of the features tablets and smartphones offer. And typing out stories won't be an issue.

All this analysis hasn't led to anything though, as I'm still very confused. Got thoughts?

Thanks!

The iPad has a couple of apps that record audio while you type, and sync your notes to the audio.

Typing with a stylus works for some people; some use portable keyboards. But you can learn to type quite efficiently on the ipad.

Or you can simply record interviews, and type later at your leisure.

But much as I love my iPad, in your place, I'd be looking at a netbook.
