Good evening from a newbie

Hi, all.

What a great website! My teenaged sons are about to carry me bodily from my computer chair for their turn to surf. I've been mesmerized by the sheer quantity of useful and interesting material, and my tush is numb, so I won't protest.

I'm a fifty-year-old mostly-retired physician halfway through my first novel, a medical examiner/historical crime story set against the backdrop of slavery and emancipation in New York. I'm as excited to be doing this work as I am inexperienced. I look forward to learning from you all.

Hey, Susan! Welcome! I have two teenage sons. They vied for the computer for years until they gave up. Then begged their many relatives for lower end computers.

Your ms. sounds interesting! You'll get a lot of info from these boards. Great people here, too.

I still practice, though on a very limited basis. I'm a psychiatrist, and I take emergency call a couple of weekends a month for a rural general hospital emergency room. Most of my career was spent in emergency rooms, so I know a fair amount of general medicine. I also was a labor and delivery room nurse before I went to med school.

If I can help with any medical questions for any of you, please do ask.

Reminds me of something that happened to me at the market the other day.

I was doing my Thanksgiving shopping, navigating the baking aisle, dreaming of pecan pie. A supermarket employee was sweeping up a mess on the floor, and he said to me, "Be careful, there's a lot of nuts around here", pointing to the huge spill of peanuts.

"That's ok," I replied, "I'm a psychiatrist."

It wasn't until I'd made it to the far end of the aisle that I heard him guffaw.

Uh-oh, Susan, you may have to wear a disguise. (Don't worry, I'm easily fooled.) I bet I'm not the only person who constantly has medical and/or psychiatric questions come up as I'm writing.

Be glad your teenage sons are home to tote you away--mine's in college now and the house is eerily silent far too often.
