My first thought was, "Why?"
Then I realized, "Oh right, corporate money-grubbers who want the proceeds from the more expensive 3D tickets and plan on using the popularity of the film in order to attract viewers. They even put a time-limit on the in-theater screening to try to rush people."

Just look at the second-top comment ATM of this posting:
I still think 3D is the BIGGEST gimmick ever, but hey, it's the fraking Lion King.

I agree with you, LOG. I died laughing at that top youtube comment "Your childhood ----> in 3D" That's true for me. HAhahaha. 3D is so much cheaper to make (other film companies jump on the bandwagon; you get profits!) plus, as you mention, the company gets money off the extra for 3D tickets.

I love that movie; got it on cassette, but I will not be going to see it.

Too much 3D is murder on your eyes anyway. The younger generation are gonna be a bunch of nearsighted folk, if the blindness doesn't get them first. In other news, Lion King was awesome. Can't believe it's been like 17yrs since it came out.

Well... the two-week time limit isn't really trying to rush people. A movie's success is mostly determined in its opening weekend box office gross. Disney is smart enough to know that with new movies releasing every weekend, audiences aren't going to wait a month to go see an "old" film in theaters, nor will the theaters keep it in their queues after a couple weeks if they can turn the auditorium over and play a new release instead.

They did this last year with Toy Story 1 and 2 before Toy Story 3 hit theaters, and it worked, so they're using the same model. This release is more of a stunt to coincide with The Lion King releasing on DVD than it is about coming back to theaters in 3D. And there is a whole generation of kids who may not have seen it, since it's not been available on DVD in awhile--that's not just money in DVD and ticket sales, but merchandising and toys.

It's the Lion King on theater. I'd see it even if it were on fire.

Personally, I'm going to see it. But for me it's not so much about the 3D, as seeing it in theaters again...I mean, I'm too young to remember when it came out. It's just been there my whole life (Arianna Sterling is only 18).
