How would I manipulate myself? Write or Die on a different scale.

For my first book I used Alpha readers to spur myself to reach a certain chapter count each week. This worked really well for me, but I'd prefer to use a method that doesn't offer feedback this time.

I'm wanting to devise a system with my husband's assistance (and he's willing) wherein he's my word keeper.

I e-mail him, or put on a USB drive, a set amount of words every day. If I don't reach my quota he begins to delete or doesn't release my material to me for editing or something else equally horrifying.

I got the idea from the Write or Die program, but I wanted something that gave me a full day to produce results because I have children and need the time to shuffle my work around my life schedule. I also wanted much more horrific consequences.

I need tech help to sort out how to transfer the files to him in a way that MY computer doesn't have a record of the file.

If I simply delete after I save to USB, would this work?

I'm not so tech savvy, but if I can figure out a way to recover info, then my plan loses it's integrity and there is no threat involved.

Once I get going I have less tendency to stall, but at the moment I am getting distracted by housework and kids and just stuff which DOES need to be dealt with. Unfortunately, I think I am happier when productive and want some accountability.

Any ideas on this?

Well, yes, deleting your file and emptying your recycle bin would work.

But . . . but . . . there's got to be a better way. I see too much danger with this system. Let me think on this for a bit.

Isn't there any other "carrot and stick" system you can use? For example, if you don't reach your word goal you have to do a chore around the house that he usually does (if, being a guy, he does any), or pay him a certain small amount of money to use any way he wants.

That might work.

I haven't figured out the consequence aspect yet. I think simply not having access to the material for editing would drive me MAD. I usually like to read through every 10,000 words or so, sometimes not.

Yet I was hoping for something immediate. I'm sure Jeremy could come up with a horrifying punishment, like taking away all my pajama pants or making me wear a shirt that says, "My husband is smarter than I am." He'd like that.

If he's a tech guy, and has access, he can log on to your computer by remote and lock certain parts out.

Still, let's see if we can think of something better.

Perhaps he could change my facebook and AW passwords, or change one if I miss a day, then another if I miss a second day, then take the internet router to work with him if I miss a third.

This would shut me off social networking (a distraction anyway) and it's pretty dire. It's a good motivation to work because I'd have a lot less to do. I don't mind giving him my current passwords.

Keep thinking.

I like the general concept. I know many AW'ers like the program. If a simplified format like this works it might be useful to others too. I thought about e-mailing daily material to writing buddies, but there's a record of that. :(

I have seen (but never used) a system similar to the swear jar.

You pick something you want to buy (the carrot) but can't buy it unless you write X amount of words every day. X amount of words every day gets you X amount of money that goes into the "tip jar" (the stick).

Obviously, it has to be something you want to have but don't want to shell out the money for it straight away. It also needs to be something you can afford in the short / medium term. Unless you're already rich ;)

That's a good idea too.

I think this would work well if we bought something like a $25 B&N gift card and taped it up on the wall in the office. I get to have it when I complete the MS, but only if I do so by X date.

I like to work on deadlines. It seems to push my brain into higher creative gear.

Maybe combining the two.

Hmm.

That might be a good idea too, yeah. And you can make "my" idea more challenging too. If you give yourself 1$ per day, and you miss a day, you take out 1$ from the jar. Or worse, your husband takes the dollar away, buys chocolate with it and doesn't give you any while eating it right in front of you ;p

If you have a writing partner, you could also play a little game. If you miss a day, you give him / her 1$. He / she obviously has to do the same if he / she misses a day too. As long as nobody misses a day, no money changes hands.

You could easily have a folder with your permissions set to write only. That way you could drop the document in there and only he could read it with his groovy read permissions. A similar setup with Dropbox could be done, too.

I totally know what you mean about needing to motivate yourself!

maybe if you lock up you computer in safe mode and can only log on as guest with no internet access or anything?

Maybe if for every fail one of your DVR'd shows gets deleted (that would upset me a bit but then there's the internet...)

maybe he takes a few of your favorite clothes and for ever fail it goes to donation.

I really like iRock's suggestion.

What is an Alpha reader?

Also, sometimes just having someone ask "How much did you write today?" and knowing they're going to ask it is upsetting enough motivation.
