Man, I would LOVE LOVE LOVE LOOOOOVVVVEEE to see this one! Dang it! Erwin definitely has it made if he can write a very compelling script, make it into a feature!
I'd be willing to pay just 8 to 10 bucks just to see it on the day it comes out!
I had a similar story I was working on years ago until I abandoned it completely for lack of historical research, riddled plot holes, and unsure of its direction. I was to introduce a futuristic race, who called themselves the Combine (Yes, the Combine from Half Life 2). They were led by a lady who knew Latin as part of her skillset and was a female commander. They teleported through time and finally found themselves in Roman times. They were found in the times of Commodus, Nero, and others. They had advanced weaponry: high pulse rifles, pulse repeaters, sticky grenades, shard grenades, and others. One of the problems that I ran into was the lack of industrial output to produce the ammunition these soldiers needed. I ended up making sure they would spend their ammo conservatively.
Part of the story was that the lady who knew Latin became Empress, was soon vilified by men who hated her and the Combine naturally changed themselves into the Combine Guard, a high-tech Praetorian-type Guard. She then suppressed many men. Thousands of years later, you have the world engulfed under the rule of Empresses throughout the ages and there has never been any single country developed. Latin was the lingua franca of all Earth and everyone spoke the language. Slavery existed to a minimum; gladiatorial sports continued. Wars continued to be fought. It was a brutal kind of Rome unlike today, though no one is safe from the Combine Guard.
