Hello everyone,

I hope this is the right place to post this - if not, perhaps a friendly mod would move it somewhere more appropriate?

As you might know, in common with a lot of other publishers, we strongly prefer to consider manuscripts that are sent to us by literary agencies, and we don't have an email inbox for unagented submissions. But I think it might be interesting to open a channel for a small number of picture book manuscripts, and to give authors instant feedback on their work.

At some point between now and Friday we'll tweet a link to an email address to which you can send your manuscript. That address will stay active until the 25th message comes in - any MS that comes in after that will, I'm afraid, be invisibly deleted without any of us seeing it.

We will then sit down and work our way through those 25 manuscripts, and then tweet our reaction - either a note to let you know we're taking it to our next editorial meeting, or a rejection, and as much feedback as we can get into 140 characters. Your work will be read by experienced picture book commissioning editors.

If you're interested, there are a few rules we need you to follow:

  • You need to have a Twitter account, and to let us know your Twitter name so we can tweet you back. (Oh, and your real name, naturally!)
  • Please don't send more than one manuscript.
  • Please don't send us more than one email, as each one will count towards the 25 email limit and waste a slot for someone else. We're trying to automate this system, but it's easy to break if you don't follow the rules, and we don't have the time to manage the inbox manually.

If you break any of those rules, I'm afraid we'll ignore your emails entirely...

I'm starting this off here, with a fairly low limit of 25, as a pilot scheme, but feel free to tell other people about it. If this works well we'll do it once a month or so and add more slots.

The Twitter account to follow is @RHCBlog and our blog - where we will do some related posts about writing and publishing picture books - is www.talkaboutrandom.co.uk.

I'd be really interested to hear your thoughts on this... so please do let me know what you think!

When you tweet the responses will you reference the book's title or will you just refer to the submission as the submission?

Another question: Do you want the submission in a Word document or pasted in the body of the email?

I'm very new to Twitter and don't understand it too well.

So my stupid question is: How do I send you my twitter name (and real name, naturally)?

This sounds interesting, but I don't want to mess it up before I get started.

Hi Escritora! I think we won't mention the book's title or say much to identify it - only 140 to play with, so will stick to useful feedback.

Pasted into the email is best; that ensures we will be able to open it.

Just add that info into the email you send containing the manuscript - that will work fine.

So cool! Really appreciate this, RHCB Digital.

(Amarie, PBs tend to be under a thousand words, but the trend has been to be under 500 words of late)

So I am assuming that since these will be presented in digital format, you are going to match up illustrators with chosen authors? I've not seen too many digital PBs.

We're not necessarily looking for digital picture books, just picture books. We have recently started to publish picture Epubs on Kindle and iBooks, but this process would be looking for texts that we could publish in print and/or in digital form. We are not looking for illustration samples as yet.

Usually we would look to match a good text up with an illustrator, yes.

Thanks. I guess I was zoning in on the Digital aspect and didn't realize it was PBs in any form.

Since I'm on the other side of the big pond from you, my chances of being on Twitter at the time of your tweet are pretty much zero. But I'll be watching and reading the info you include on your blog.

RHCB Digital, you can tweet more than 140 characters using Ubersocial. It automatically creates a link to the rest of your tweet. You can download ubersocial from wwww.ubersocial.com

Thanks for the tip, but I think we will keep the discipline of 140 characters - will keep things concise.

What a fantastic opportunity. :)

Should the e-mail include a query or synopsis before the manuscript?

Sounds like an awesome idea. Any hints on when you'll be tweeting the email address? :D

Heh, I don't think it'd be too much of a surprise to anyone if I said 'At some point tomorrow'. Some time between 9am and 5pm, BST... Can't wait to see what happens!

Thank you. :D
