Firefox 6.0

I upgraded to FF 6.0 this morning.

Let's see what new terrors awaits us.

I'm still using Firefox 3.6 and enjoying it very much. The memory-hogging in the later versions is just ridiculous.

Mine does not say this just 6.0. Are you sure you've update and have the Firefox button that came out with 4.0

I denied an update a little while back because I didn't like the funky new layout. So, maybe that's why mine is different.

I'm getting very irritated with Firefox - for some reason it doesn't recognize the Page Up or Page Down buttons (unlike Chrome and Opera), which is why I have been using all three browsers for different things - you can go ahead and laugh now...

Meh. Either you update, update, update, or websites start telling you that your browser is no longer supported. I installed Fire-ox 6 portable (portableapps.com), and didn't see much difference except that a few add-ons went lame.

It's by far the least serious issue I have with Firefox. The "restart your browser now" stuff drives me insane - it is one of the reasons I have been using Opera to browse AW. I never know how long I'll be able to browse without something needing updating. Thus far I haven't been booted out of a session, or had Opera crash on me...

(all personal opinion, and I'm sure there are folks who swear by Firefox's ability to cope with things being thrown at it)

I'm running a test to see if I want to go back to IE. I'm on IE 8 now.

The first thing I did was relearn how to turn that damn clicking sound off when you click a link.

I'll see how it goes. I've heard IE has been improved. I haven't used it in three or four years.

I've been using Chrome, and I for the most part couldn't be happier. It's my go to browser.

I've reinstalled FF, and with some extensions to undo the terrible "new" layout, it runs pretty decently. The next version of Firefox is all about speed and reducing its memory footprint - something to be excited for, eh?

Excited? Only if they fix the memory leaks that can cause it to gobble up a GB or more of RAM if left on for long enough and that have been there since FF2.0 at least. (Yeah, and I still use it anyway--Chrome isn't configurable enough for my taste, and IE isn't stable under WINE even if I were willing to put up with it. Opera is a possible, I suppose.)

I'm going to chime in here.

I am a Chrome user and love it. I also have Firefox and the only reason I use it is to play games.

I don't use IE because it usually takes too cotton pickin' long to come up.

@Alexys: I haven't seen a memory leak issue first hand since going to 64bit, but then again like I said I really don't use Firefox enough to experience much :P

The only thing I miss is some of the plugins from Firefox, cause Ad-block + used to work great on things like YouTube - now, not so much. One of the coolest features I recently was able to take advantage of with Chrome; syncing bookmarks and your managed passwords with Gmail. When reformatting my computer, I just had to sign in through Chrome and bam - up and running without a hitch.

Attempting to troubleshoot my Firefox problems is most likely pointless--my setup (64-bit Linux, compiled on my system, plugins set up to produce a very stripped in-browser display) is sufficiently odd that there's a small possibility that I might even be seeing the effects of a compiler or library bug rather than a Firefox bug--thanks anyway, alleycat.

I get this too -- if I want to scroll using the keyboard keys, I have to click on the current page first so it's selected.

I had this same annoyance with previous versions of Firefox... then it went away... then it came back... then it went away... now it's back again...

Aside from this minor blip, FF6 is behaving admirably for me.

Hey Alexys & dpaterso - try hitting "F7" to enable caret browsing, and then try pg up/dn, et al.

My FF (finally upgraded to 6.0) only started behaving after I shut down the laptop, then ran CCleaner before using it again. Whatever was stopping scripts executing hasn't reappeared thus far, and I'm watching the amount of resources it's using - it seems to be behaving itself as long as I keep switching it off every so often and cleaning up after it.

FF6.0 is eating an outrageous amount of RAM for me. "Downgrading" back to 3.6
