Tense issues with quick short flashbacks.

Firstly, you are swapping between the past and past perfect (not present and past) - or at least you are in the highlighted example (by referring to 'had'). I think that is the way to do it and I don't think you need separate paragraphs. If you include a couple of 'hads' in the first part, I think it would be fine.
