Does anyone know how much you would have to smoke to get nicotine stains on your fingers?

My characters are in 1945 but a modern estimate would do.

My father and many men of that generation -- born ca. 1900-1910 -- had the stains -- two or more packs a day, unfiltered Camels, Lucky Strike, Chesterfields and such. I do not recall any women having them. You might add stained teeth as well.

Not much; when I used to smoke (around a pack a day) I had stains on the index and middle fingers of my left hand, where I held my cigarette. The nails on those two fingers were discolored as well.
I noticed this after less than a year of smoking, when i was still in my teens.

I get them if I'm chain-smoking (chain-holding?) my burning ciggies without much actual smoking. That usually happens overnight (as a student, on the PC pulling an all-nighter). More than a half pack, I'd say, in 10-12 hours or something like that.

It also depends on if the cigarettes were filtered. Generally, though filters were invented in the 30s, they were still pretty much a novelty until the 50s. So in 1945, odds are good they'd have cigarette stained fingers if they smoked heavily.

I smoked 2 packs a day and never had stains.

My Dad, unfiltered camels, smoked for about 75 years, badly stained fingers and nails.

Hubby, filtered Marlboros, over 50 years, medium stains on his hands and nails.

Me, filtered Parliaments which have the extra heavy paper around the filter, 50 years, and no stains.

We all smoke(d) about the same amount. Puma
