Is there a book that I can review that would answer many of the following questions? For example, these are some items I am confused about. Most of them are probably basic.

- How should state a new, non dictionary term? Should it be in italics or quotes?

- After using the new, non dictionary term, with either italic or quotes, can you drop the italic/quotes from subsequent use? Should it be "redefined" in different chapters?

- For bullet lists, should they start with lower or upper case?

- For bullet lists, should they have a period at the end or just follow normal grammar (i.e. if a sentence use a period, if a fragment then don't).

- Should figure captions end in a period?

- How consistent does tense need to be? I am not good at staying in a consistent tense.

- For non-fiction, what person should I use (first, second, third). Is it OK to mix this?

You might want to get a copy of the Chicago Manual of Style or some other style guide. It will have answers to more questions than you ever thought to ask. ;)

The key is to pick what to do (use a period or don't in a bulleted list) and then be consistent about it. Copy editors will fix a lot of style issues, but that's a lot easier to do when the author's been consistent.

Thanks, I ordered the book and it looks to be very good for technical books.
