Publication Suggestions for oddball stories

Hi All,

As well as my usual conventional fiction pieces, I have blasted out a few stories that don't really have a plot as such, they are more based around a strange event and how the people involved react. I started doing them to stretch the old writing muscles but some have come out quite interesting but aren't really conventional enough for most markets.

Anyone have any suggestions for oddball markets that might be worth submitting such metaphorical entities to?

It all depends on how long your pieces are, have you tried duotrope?

I agree, it depends on factors such as length, content, etc. Duotrope would be the best place to start- if you haven't tried it already. I would try and find what genre it's closest to and start from there.

Yeah, I use duotrope but was hoping to check out and read a publication first so was after a personal suggestion. Stories are aroun 2000 words. thanks.

Duotrope is your best bet. I have had some luck sending oddball stories to conventional literary magazines. It depends on your writing style. Mine is more literary so they are often a good fit. Also, online magazines are sometimes more willing to take a chance than print. Longer stories are harder to place.

The question is, are they really stories? Ones with beginnings, middles, and endings, which means a resolution?

This really determines who might want them, and, honestly, you have to read short story magazines to stand much chance of selling most stories. Trying to sell just by reading guideline sis a tough, tough, tough way of selling short stories.

I think they call them 'quirky'. There are some places that do shorts called that.

I basically agree, but I sold my first story after reading just one copy of the magazine in question. Perhaps I should have read a few dozen or more, but the thought didn't occur to me.

Though I did subscribe as soon as they bought me. And I've read voraciously in the genre ever since.
