Sorry if this thread is placed in the wrong section. This is a discussion for fans of the books and upcoming movie. If you want to gripe, see this thread instead: http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=195012&highlight=don't+hunger+games

What do you think of the cast for the film? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1392170/fullcredits#cast

Who would you have chosen for the roles? Any that you're particularly excited or miffed about?

Also, I was wondering about the role of Rue. Through most of the Games, Katniss operates alone. For the film, I'm wondering if they're going to pair Katniss and Rue much earlier on so there isn't a lot of time with Katniss having noone to talk to.

I like the casting, though I'm not too familiar with any of the actors, so mostly I'm basing that opinion on what they look like. I kind of wished I loved the girl playing Katniss a little more. I just think she looks too . . . model-y. Eh. I dono.

I've gotta wonder if they'll do a Katniss voice-over through parts of the movie, since you pointed out that in a lot of cases, either she's alone or she's not really talking to people. Most of her stuff goes on in her head.

I'm pretty pumped for the movie either way, I'm just hoping they find the right balance of gore/romance/tension. It's gonna be a fine line.

I'm excited. I heard they're cutting out Madge though, which I think would be a shame. None of the actors match up to my brain-pictures, but that's always the case.

Lenny Kravitz is playing Cinna? Woah.

I think Woody Harrelson as Haymitch is brilliant.

I was on the fence about Jennifer Lawrence playing Katniss until I saw Winter's Bone. Hopefully the directors/producers/costars will let her keep that sort of style in her acting.

Otherwise, no one looks like I pictured them, but that's often the case when books become film. I'd be lying if I said I weren't tickled in a good way when they cast Lenny Kravitz. Major upgrade to my brain picture of Cinna.

Yeah, I don't see Madge or the Mayor listed so I'm guessing they cut their parts.

Also, Woody Harrelson as Haymitch is one I'm disappointed about. In my head, it was Michael Caine. But I saw someone mention on another board Liam Neeson, which I thought was fitting as well. I've never been a Harrelson fan, so we'll see.

And Elizabeth Banks as Effie? I imagined her to be like 70 years old, since she'd also been around when Haymitch was a tribute.

For some reason I pictured Snow as Danny Glover.. though I think Donald Sutherland will do an excellent job.

I think he's perfect to play Snow. Didn't even occur to me until I saw that, though. I do think they picked a fairly perfect guy for Gale, though.

Well, I definitely did not see Peeta that way. I saw him as more boyish and approachable. I also really expected the blonde curly hair, like this guy: Freddie Stroma* http://www.emmawatsonitalia.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/freddie_stroma.jpg

*Note: I don't actually know who he is, or if he's any good. I just googled for blonde actors. :)

The face fits more as to what was in my mind.

YES! That's exactly the kind of person I pictured for Peeta. (Or even the kid from Glee that plays Sam). The guy in the movie is far too big for the part.

Trout mouth for Peeta? Hah. Though, I think Chord Overstreet looks more like Peeta than the guy they picked. I'm pretty unhappy with all of the choices except for Woody Harrelson. I mean, I like that they got Lenny Kravitz on board, but I always imagined Aaron Yoo as Cinna.

I think Zach Roerig would've made a good Peeta. I don't know who he is or if his acting is decent. His looks just match what I would've expected.

Well, my crystal ball just told me a date my boyfriend and I will be going on someday in the future... ;)

He's not much of a reader so when books I like get turned into movies it makes me pretty happy since it means I can at least attempt to share them with him.

I never thought of Woody Harrelson either but on thinking about it, he is a pretty good choice. I think Michael Caine is too classy to play someone like Haymitch. Haymitch is supposed to be a drunk, disgusting, crude, unkempt, kind of guy with his life in the toilet when Hunger Games starts. He's sarcastic, says what he thinks, and is not afraid to tell people off.

When i read the book, I immediately pictured Robert Downey Jr (who could really connect with this character based on his past) or a slightly younger Jack Nicholson.

The one choice I'm really disappointed about is Gale. Gale is such an interesting character and the actor they chose isn't really good. I saw the Last Song and he was horrible in it. I could tell he was just reciting his lines.

But besides that, I'm happy with Jennifer Lawrence. She convinced me with Winter's Bone and I know she'll do a good job.

Well, remember, an actor's quality is sometimes highly variable. Good script writing and directing REALLY makes a difference.

Example: Chris Evans. If you've seen him in the Fantastic Four, you'd say he was the most fucking annoying person in the entire UNIVERSE.

Then watch Captain America: The First Avenger.

Dude's amazing!

Yeah, I'm not sure why my mind's eye placed Caine as Haymitch.. I agree he's a bit "classy" and probably too old.. but he's also a good actor. I could see him transforming into that role pretty easily. Harrelson though? I just never thought he could act.

I haven't seen most of the other actors perform in anything.. I really hope they do a good job.

Anyone watching the VMAs? Have they aired the trailer yet? I'm not watching it live as the kids are still up, but DVR'ing it JUST for the sneak-peek. :D

I saw it while I was running on the running machine in the gym.

Yawn. I'm not a huge fan of the Hunger Games, but...I don't know, the trailer didn't really sell me on the movie. Also, is it just me or did Katniss' clothes look really modern.

I know, I know, we've worn jeans for almost a century and a half now, but still!

Ah. This post reminds me I need to get back my copy of The Hunger Games I lent to my friend.

Honestly, I'm neutral leaning to slightly pessimistic about the casting. I never really thought about who should be cast (thus the neutral) but I am surprised at how the cast looks so old. I also expected them to be scrawnier, since there was such an emphasis on food shortages in the initial chapters of the book. The main cast looks so incredibly healthy.

And then I remind myself this is a movie, and there's only so much one should go through for art.

I do adore Gary Ross. Pleasantville is one of my favourite films ever, so I'm expecting great things.
