I'm bying a new laptop, Which one???

Hello all. I know this will sound like a stupid question but i really need some advice. You see my laptop now a Dell Inspiron 1525 has been acting up a little, and the battery and charger died.

So looking at that new advertisement where if your a college student you can get a free X-box 360 my mom said go ahead get a new laptop, after all its been 3 years I've had my dreaded dell. So my question is which one is best to get... now i know 95% of you will say a mac, well i dont like mac's (yes please dont burn me at the stake!!!) sorry just can never get used to the OS... its not for me, plus for the deal i need a windows 7 running computer.

So on that note, what can people advise? I'm looking for something that woudl run pretty fast, have lots of room for music and my books and pictures, and will (hopefully) last a pretty long time. I've been looking into an HP Envy 14. Are they good? Anyone know of something better. Thanks for any info you might have!

I don't think the make and model matter all that much. Main things you need to consider are:

Processor speed and RAM, which both need to be as high as you can afford.

Software installed on it that you are likely to use (as opposed to much free software which is usually not all that useful which is why it is free...)

Convenience - is it easy to carry? Some may be too large to carry day to day if you want to be portable. Is it too small? I find some modern netbooks have too small keyboards for comfortable typing yet my wife loves her netbook.

All of the major brands of laptop have merits and flaws so go with what you feel comfortable to use.

I agree with areteus, stats and convenience go a long way. Also, I'd suggest going to a store like Best Buy where you can 'try out' the computer and see the stats, decide what you like/need and then go buy one somewhere.

For me it comes down to the stats and how comfortable I feel with the keyboard and mouse. >< Which for me, unfortunately, does mean a mac, and I can only pray that my poor macbook keeps chugging because I don't want to see the bill for a new one...for me Toshiba's line of computers comes decently close to a comfortable keyboard and they have good memory/processing.

Ultimately, it comes down to how much you want to spend to get what you want.

Of course, I have the magical ability of choosing the most expensive model as the one I like best...

If you can afford it, spring for a business class notebook rather than a consumer class notebook. I'm a Mac guy, but if I wanted a Windows/Linux notebook, it'd be a Thinkpad.

Thanks everyone. I had to decide today for the promotial free x-box luckily i was still able to get one!!!

I chose an HP envy 14. Looked at like a million reviews and it seems like a great fit for me, and i took your advice and got the fastest processor and largest hardrive advalible! It was a pretty penny a very large pretty penny, but from what i see with HP's durability i think it will last me a long while, after all i got a dell to last for twice its expected life!!! hehehehe.
