I'm moving closer to self-publishing my debut novel in a series and I'm busy constructing my website and blog. I want to include a sample reading for any visitors once my editor's done looking it over, but my question is what is a good size to post on your website?

Has anyone any thoughts on what draws in more readers?

When I queried, agents asked for a sample reading from five to fifty pages along with the query to get a taste of a novel. I'm debating posting up one, two, or three chapters.

Would love to hear from anyone with experience on this matter.

Thanks,

Lauren

Lauren,

You can post as much or as little as you like. However, I think it's best just to post a chapter at a time - depending on how long your chapters are. 800-1500 words is a good figure to aim it for an excerpt IMO. You can go longer, but I wouldn't go that much longer.

You can always post another chapter another day, and so on.

Thanks for the tip! I didn't even think about releasing them slowly. Great idea!
