I'm beginning to realize some things. Well, I've always known I've been a bit different, I've just now come to the realization that my oddness applies to writing erotica, too.

First, I'm an amateur writer. I doubt I'll ever publish anything I write. Much of my material is autobiographical in nature, some of it is ideas that spring up in my mind.

The trouble is that what I write and what I read in most erotica, or at least most of what I've thus far read, is quite different. I mean, it's the same in that it's sexual in nature, but it's different.

When I write fiction, I tend to put characters in situations that are uncomfortable for them, yet vaguely erotic or sexual, and then see what happens. I've seen how authors categorize their work. My own writing doesn't quite fit. I don't set out to write a m/f or m/m or w/w or whatever. I just write what I feel like writing. I guess what I'm trying to say is that, for me, the story isn't about the act, or whatev, it's about how the characters get there, and what they learn about themselves along the way. Please don't take this as a personal affront if your work follows the similar path as mine. It's just that everything I've read in the genre is like:
Introduce characters.
Slight build up.
Money Shot.
Draw curtain, exit stage right.
Ya know?

When I write from my own experiences, it's usually something terribly awkward or funny, or just different, that also happens to have erotic elements.
Like today, something happened during my yearly hoo-hoo check up that was just that: awkward and kinda sexual. But I didn't have sex with my gynecologist or anything. It's fun to write about, but is it erotica? I dunno.

If I've made any kind of sense at all, please drop me a line and give me some insight, cuz I'm lost.

This is awesome that you just write what you write. There is no reason for you to classify your work m/m, m/f, m/m/f etc... I believe most writers who also publish classify it to know who will publish and for readers to know.

Don't write in the typical stage that you've seen. Write the way you want.
A lot of other writers do put characters in uncomfortable situations and then see what happens from there. But if you want to add more build ups, or money shots, etc... go for it.

(I hope I've understood your question)

This is just my take on this. When writing the story, you are telling the journey of your main character(s). There is conflict and resolution, trials and tribulations. Every part of the story should further the journey, including any sexual parts. The situations should reveal something about your character or the story. Your description of the erotic story seems to me a template for a short story submitted to Penthouse or something similar. Nothing wrong with that, it's what they want. A story or novel that is going to another market may want more character buildup, motivations, reasons why these two people are getting together. It depends on who you are going to market your stories to. And, as c.m.n. said, where you classify it as m/m, f/m, f/f or any larger combination. If the stories are just for you or a select few, then don't worry about saying it's 'this' or 'that'.

There are as many varied forms of erotica as there are writers. The definition varies just as much. Something can be erotic, sexual and not have the money shot. Sometimes, the money shot isn't sexual at all but more about power and control. Being different in how you approach your writing is subjective. You may be surprised and find that many think as you do. Some plot out and outline their stories to the nth degree, others just go by the seat of their pants. Then there are those in the middle somewhere. Many have their characters 'talk' to them, tell them where they want the story to go and follow their lead.

just my opinion. Hope it helps.

Thanks cmn, that means a lot. I'm building up a decent amount of stories, but I haven't found the proper way to share them. Not that I think people would be falling over themselves to read the weird crap that spills out of my brain, but I'd like to share. There's Literotica, but dear lord, that place kinda creeps me out. I still lurk around on the forums, but the stories can get out there.

This so describes me. In the short story I'm writing now, the MC just told me that no, she hasn't broken up with her boyfriend, thank you very much.
She can be a bit testy like that.
But that story kinda brings up my point. The way it's going, I don't think the two MCs will ever actually have sex. There is plenty of erotic stuff happening, but I just don't see it happening. Of course, I didn't see the boyfriend, either, but still. Is that unusual?

It sounds like what you're writing is brand-name erotica, as opposed to stroke fiction, or porn. Erotic stories are about people in which sex plays a critical role (even if no overt sexual acts take place). But there's got to be that other story. Sexual activity in isolation is just porn.

Perhaps you've been selecting your erotic reading from the wrong locations. Check out 'Mammoth Book of Best New Erotica', an annual publication, and online magazines like 'Clean Sheets'.

If you are not interested in submitting to a publisher, you can always share your work via blogs or a journal. This is what I did for a year and 1/2 before deciding to write something to publish.

Also a lot of other sites that allow you to post your stories for others to read. I'm not too familiar with those, the only one I've visited in the past is AFF.net

Hmm...feel like sharing some of your blogging advice? I've never done it before...
Which blogger do you recommend for erotica writers?

I hope I'm not bugging you too much!

No, no problem. I should note that I was writing 'original' fan fiction aka... original fiction using pictures from a pc game, so my experiences in blogging are quite different from many.

Anyway, I believe the two journal sites I would recommend are LiveJournal or Dreamwidth. Because there are communities within those sites to 'advertise' your stories in.
I use LJ myself since it's an older site and bigger with many communities, but there are ads.

Blogger is really easy to use and set up too.

And with both LJ or Blogger, you can set your blog up to 'adult' status if you are weary that youngsters may wander to your blog.

It does take time, with any sort of publishing, to draw in readers. That is why I pointed out the communities to advertise stories in.
I made some awesome friends in the game community I was writing for too :) That was a plus!!

But, I should point out, that it may be helpful for you to classify your stories so readers who search for erotica like it can find it. You don't have to say it's anything majorly complicated for right now though.

This is just my experience.

Thanks for the tips!
Now, if my natural dislike of computers can only be overcome by my desire to have a blog, I might just get somewhere.
