I've just been to the library and found a book call Crooked Talk. It's about criminal slang since the 16th century. Written by Jonathon Green and published by Random House. He's an historian and expert on slang.

So I thought... as I have it for the next four weeks I would share it with everyone. If you need to know the slang for prostitute in 17th century London or for prison guard in 19th century America, let me know and I'll look it up.

The chapter headings are:

1. Swindlers, Conmen and Frauds
2. Blackmailers and Others
3. Street Crime
4. Theft and Robbery
5. Violent Crime
6. Gangs
7. Drugs
8. Prostitution
9. The Agents of the Law
10. Trial and Sentencing
11. Incarceration

And if Mr Green is a member of this board.... I hope he doesn't mind me sharing! LOL!

I don't think Mr. Green will mind. :D You just sold one of his books. I went on a search, found it, and bought it for my Kindle. Thx.

He may not object to a sale following a recommendation but I'm not sure about the ethics of 'freebies for everyone - just ask'.

If it were my book....but then again, it isn't, is it?

Hey Hey!

I wonder if I can get commission......

Home - but for how long?
Thank you.

I'll put that in Resources by Era.

Jonathon Green has several excellent books on slang and I'd suggest people buy a copy of his general slang dictionary for their reference.

Well, ethically they aren't copying the book verbatim and publishing it on the internet for free. They are offering a limited time chance to use it as a reference which is no different to me going round to a mate's house and asking to look in their encyclopedia collection.

Jonathon is a friend of mine, and I'm sure he wouldn't mind as long as you don't post whole chunks of his dictionaries verbatim. However, if you'd like to ask him a question directly, he hangs out on Quora quite a lot.

Everyone interested in slang ought to have a copy of the Cassell Dictionary of Slang, and if you can afford it, his recent, monumental Green's Dictionary of Slang - instantly the standard work on the subject.

No, no. I had no intention of quoting whole chunks. Just if someone needed a reference.

Obviously, if he objects then the thread can be locked.
