Hello Writers,

I'm new to this forum, so you probably don't know me. So I'm saying, "Hi." It's an interesting exercise to say hello to bunch of people you don't know, sort of like greeting random people on the street. Which is to say, it works far better when you have free beer, unless of course, you run into a policeman.

I've only started writing anything besides email in the last few years and decided to have a go at penning something a stranger might actually want to read for enjoyment. I've done a lot of work in computer games, though that's hardly applicable. Some of the worst books I've ever read were either based on video games, or written for a video game to be based on. I only read those books because the company I was working for was thinking of making a game based on one of them. They were awful, and I've vowed never to inflict that pain upon anyone else.

The biggest difference between a book and a game is that a book is all about expressing a certain point of view, be it through a focal character or a narrator; while a game is all about creating situations that let a player have their own point of view. As such, books based on games tend to be bland recountings of fact; while games based on books (or movies) offer the players no real freedom to explore their own ideas.

Anyway, the reason that I've joined this forum is because I've written a book, a short novel, and am looking to do a beta-reader swap with it. I saw the beta-reader forum and will probably head over there in a day or so, after I feel I've got this board figured out.

One of my weaknesses is that I'm not used to formal writing. Over the last couple months I've been reading as much as I can on punctuation and doing revisions based on what I've learned.

I've done this before. Terrifying, yet invigorating at the same time. :)

Welcome to the forum. You've certainly come to the right place to learn, read, and mingle! Have fun!

Welcome! Have you read the Halo spin-off novels? Most of them are really good, and don't just novelise the games - there's The Fall of Reach which, although it came out years before Halo: Reach, is a totally different recounting of the first days of the war. I'd highly recommend it.

Welcome to AW. Hope you enjoy your stay with us.
How do you like your popcorn?

If you go to the bottom of the page to the ‘forum jump’ you can scroll down and find all the areas of this place. Most of the SYW areas require the password of ….vista. A word to the wise, (50 posts), it would be a good idea to participate first in helping others before you think about posting your own work. After you have been around here for awhile, then post something of your own for help. Good luck.

Hey all, thanks for the warm welcome! There seems to be a nice community here. I hope a can make a positive contribution and get a lot out of it.

@DavidBrett - Books based on game worlds can work quite nicely and vice versa. Plots, on the other hand, are less compatible.

@regdog - Hello! and I won't rush through the 50 too fast.

@Aylaa - I popped on my 3d glasses— nice avatar!

@CactusWendy - I like the those half-popped kernels that are just crunchy enough, but don't hurt my teeth.

@Jamiehall - Is it peanut butter jelly time?

@RHuszar - Well then maybe we've met. Seriously though, if you want to meet random people try a bar, or jail, or both.
