So, what's your preferred genre, and why do you like to read/write it?
I'll start off. Personally, I love contemporary romance, or paranormal. Adventure occasionally, but only if written well ie. Harry Potter, Hunger Games. Twilight is a big no-no.

Would love to hear what other people's tastes are :)

I kinda love it all, though I will admit I'm much newer to the contemp genre like Anna and the French Kiss, and Some Girls Are and so many others which have been written so well that it has made me a fan of the genre in general. Overall, though i like anything that is not overwritten, not overly detailed, and has awesome characters that I can either connect to or are just so kick ass that I wish I could either be them or hang out with them :) I guess you can say I'm eclectic in my taste (like I am with my music and movies). I love books in certain genres and I don't care for certain books in that same genre. It's the writing and character development that make me love or not love a book. A strong voice is definitely something that can suck me in.

Unfortunately, I find myself the same in my writing. I like to write it ALL. I know this could be an issue, but I write whatever story comes to me, though I tend to have an "edge" to my works. Right now I have two completed Paranormal romance thrillers, and I'm working on a Dystopian and a Contemp Thriller and I also began a book that's fantasy :D

I love paranormal. Love love love. Vampires? Eh, I'd be really picky. Werewolves, less picky. Witches? Heck yes. Ghosts? Depends on the plot.

I read any YA that's not high fantasy or dystopian. These subgenres just don't appeal to me.

I tend to mostly write edgy contemporary YA with romantic elements, although I do have a few romantic suspenses and an urban fantasy.

Contemporary YA (to read and write).

Followed closely by all things MG (though I only write contemporary MG - for now, at least).

I love reading creature fantasies (and wrote one!) where the beasties involved are something off the beaten path, or tied to a certain mythology. Really, anything with a mythological basis is a treat for me, and YA has never let me down, there!

Erm, I'll read anything, but mostly contampary and fantasy (in that genre, Harry Potter, Narnia (even though it's MG) and The Mortal Instruments are my favourites) or paranormal YA. At the moment, I'm writing a paranormal romance, but one day I want to try and write an urban fantasy.

I read everything, and it's hard to pick a favorite genre within YA. I love contemp (like Anna and the French Kiss, and authors John Green and Sarah Dessen) and I love fantasy (like Ash by Malinda Lo, Book of a Thousand Days by Shannon Hale).

But so far I've written a YA mystery, my WIP is a YA sci-fi, and I have a YA paranormal outlined. I love it all, and it shows! :)

I don't have a favorite genre, really. I like fantasy and romance and just plain old comtemp and I like to write all of them, too.

I love fantasy, paranormal and romance. I enjoy writing these thing happening in our own world so that I can set events of a normal life against a huge situation so that my characters are shown as being both heroic and human.

Some of my favorite things to read? Hmm... House of Night, Vampire Academy, Harry Potter (I know, it's MG)... I read a lot of adult fantasy, paranormal and romance stuff as well. I pick what I read based on how exciting I think the idea is and continue reading (in the case of a series) based on how well I feel the story is executed, how much I like the characters and how interested I am in what is happening.

Contemporary. It used to be paranormal, but I got bored writing it. I feel like there's a lot more I can do with contemporary, but I do still read some paranormal.

Contemporary, although I'm not so much a fan of romance. I like it if it's a subplot, but not if it's driving the book. The Truth about Forever is an exception to this rule.

Epic fantasy and paranormal to read, epic to write. Not a fan of contemporary...unless it's written by Melina Marchetta lol. Though, there are a few contemps in my TBR pile so we'll see if I can get into it any more.

In my head, as do many writers lol.
I enjoy writing fantasy and horror in particular (I love anything edgy, ha ha!) I also wrote an epic fantasy novel actually and am searching for betas at the time being. Whenever I read or write anything related to fantasy or horror, I feel a sort of adrenaline rush =P

Science fiction! I'll read more hard-hitting science fiction than I write. In mine I like it a little diluted with fantasy/supernatural and dystopian.

Pure fantasy and supernatural are okay sometimes, but pure dystopian is starting to bore me.

I can't stand books like House of Night, Vampire Academy, Hush, Hush, Fallen, or Shiver because they revolve around romantic plot tumors. If they fessed up and actually said that they were JUST romances, that would be alright. But they pretend to have actual plots outside of girl meets boring boy, girl meets interesting boy, girl ditches interesting boy after cheating for a while, girl gets with boring boy.

Also, I don't like the majority of YA chick-lit. I can't get into Anna and the French Kiss or any of the books with whiny entitled MCs that annoy the hell out of me like Perfect Chemistry or The Princess Diaries.

I don't like edgy contemporary like Cut, Crank, or Beautiful.

I do like contemporary in the vein of John Green, Courtney Summers, CK Kelly Martin, Melina Marchetta, Sarah Dessen, Elizabeth Scott, and Barry Lyga.

I do like sci-fi, but not Beth Revis/Lauren DeStefano psuedo-science.

I do like fantasy, but not man bashing Graceling fantasy, or Mary Sue centric Study Series fantasy.

And I could like Urban Fantasy if it wasn't basically becoming PNR. I blame Cassandra Clare for ruining that and steampunk.

I like romance. But I hate when it becomes the central focus of the story if the book pretends to have another plot. I want a return to actual stories that don't revolve around a happy ending love story. At the very least, give me a relationship that doesn't work out.

Definitely fantasy. Lots of freedom, and it encompasses every other genre :)

EDIT: I agree with thebloodfiend about romantic plot tumours -- this happens a lot in YA fantasy. If a book is meant to be urban fantasy (for example), the focus of the plot should really be the urban fantasy, not the romance. I don't mind if there is romance, so long as there's not so much of it that it completely smothers the plot (which is usually the case). Maybe there's just a lot of confusion when it comes to the urban fantasy/paranormal romance distinction... I don't know. But it'd be nice to come across YA fantasies with actual YA fantasy plots more often.

Definitely fantasy and science fiction, for me. However, I do prefer certain sub-genres over others (i.e. traditional fantasy over paranormal).

I do enjoy a YA contemporary every now and then -- but every time I try to write one, I end up adding fantastical or sci-fi elements to it.

I absolutely love reading and writing YA contemporary... any time I try to write fantasy or sci-fi or paranormal, I get too frustrated and sidetracked and the plots get too complicated to keep track of. I do best working in our real world, mining relationships for plot rather than magic and creatures. My favourite contemp authors are John Green, Maureen Johnson, Melina Marchetta, Ellen Hopkins... too many to name!

Although contemporary is my absolute favourite to write, I do read a fair bit of fantasy/PNR and I also love historical YA (I grew up on L.M. Montgomery's Emily of New Moon). I love the epic MG fantasy series like Harry Potter (also a major influence in my life) and His Dark Materials and stuff. But I could never write anything that complex! My writing is definitely best suited to contemp.

Contemp, Romance, and Adventure. Edgy contemp that makes you go, "whaaaa???" is my niche ;)

Writing: contemporary, definitely. I've gotten some ideas that don't fall under this genre but a lot of times, I find I don't get into them as much.

Reading: Now, for reading...I LOVE contemp. Some of my favorite books are under this label, but I read a lot of other things. It all comes down to what sounds interesting to me.

I used to read nothing but fantasy novels. If you gave me a book with dragons or gryphons in it I was a happy person. I then started getting into urban fantasy (I still love vampires though werewolves are still my favorite) then paranormal romance. I've gotten a little tired of the PR genre since most of the books I read tend to be the same as the last. I've only recently started reading and enjoying contemporary. There were also the odd horror novels thrown in, but I just can't get scared by a book (even most horror movies don't bother me).

I write pretty much what I read.

I'm a fantasy girl at heart, and some paranormal. I also like a lot of plain old contemporary.

I write a mix of fantasy and contemporary for the most part.
