Hey guys,
When submitting a manuscript to a publisher, should you say you had visions of it being a board book? My book is one that has moving parts from page to page.

Thanks a bunch!

For something like that, the publisher will probably want a rough prototype. It doesn't have to be perfect but it should give an idea of the mechanics involved. The same goes for pop-ups and lift-the-flap books. Submit it only to publishers or book producers who already make such books.

:hi: All my research says that, in a case where you are submitting a manuscript, you should indicate in the cover letter whether it is a board book, picturebook, etc.

So, with parts moving from page to page, this is a pop-in-the-slot book?

You need to think carefully about the age level. Books aimed at children under 18 months (most board books) have to be rigorously safety-tested; I think that loose parts made of paper or card would probably fail. Pop-in-the-slot books are usually standard picture book formats, aimed at older toddlers.

The main character of the book can move from page to page. It's appropriate for ages 3-6. I have built a prototype, but am unsure how big is too big to send. Would it be better for me to send a powerpoint presentation or pictures instead of the book I've made?

Thanks all.

I'd advise against a Powerpoint presentation. Don't send anything irreplaceable, either. I'd suggest taking some detailed pictures of the book with the character in place on each page.

The book will stand or fall on the quality of the text - the novelty element will not in itself sell it - so you don't need to go to great lengths to demonstrate the mechanism.

Thanks for the advice Torgo, Storyteller and Joe. This site is a neverending source of info. Glad I stumbled upon it.

There is a great article on Harold Underdown's website about board books. (Vanessa, I sent you a message about this too.)
