Agent vs. Direct Submission

I've just finished a first draft of a 60k word erotic romance novel, with BDSM themes. I set it down for a couple of weeks and then came back to it to start editing. I'm wondering if I can get some opinions on whether it would be better to try to get an agent or to submit it directly to a publisher.

Three publishers I am interested in pursuing are Loose Id, Ellora's Cave and Samhain, mostly because I have read a lot of their books and feel my work fits in well with what they offer. I notice they take authors without agents quite frequently.

I was also interested in Harlequin Spice, but thought I might need an agent for them.

Any thoughts or experiences you can share would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Erotic romance is one of those genres for which you don't really need an agent to submit. Some others with more experience and success with those publishers will surely be here soon to offer more specific advice.

Thank you. I kind of suspected due to the variety of work available in this genre. I guess, I was worried going unagented might mean my work would get lost in the shuffle of all the other similar novels out there. I know everyone thinks their work is a precious snowflakem and I'm no different. ;) But I guess promotion is a different question for a different thread. I'm certainly getting ahead of myself.
Thank you for your reply kuwisdelu!
