I am a bit iffy because this album is supposed to have no death metal or growling in it so I just hope for the best.

From the cover it looks like the album is going to sound like 1970s prog rock. I like my Opeth heavy and dreary, a la My Arms, Your Hearse and Deliverance. I know, never judge an album by its cover. Wonderful art, though!

An ex of mine's favourite band was Opeth. Consequently, I listened to their early albums quite a bit. I don't mind them, but they're not my favourite thing in the world.

I like their lyrics as a general rule, but the voice of the singer isn't really my thing.

Agreed about the vocals, but more because I don't like clean vocals intruding on my black metal. I understand it's progressive metal, but still...

Mmm. Well, I don't mind clean vocals in certain situations. I just didn't like that guy's clean vocals. *shrug*

But yeah, growl all the way is much more my style.

Or perhaps just clean vocals for one or two lines at a time that highlight a shift in ambience or tone of lyrics.

The clean vocals on their album "Deliverance" are really very tolerable. Maybe it's because I'm inebriated atm. Maybe they've finally grown on me. Maybe both...

/resurrect.

I was so wrong about everything. This album is amazing. AMAZING. The musicianship of these guys is...otherwordly. I was afraid, when I first heard about this album, that it would be "soft" in addition to having "soft" vocals. Nuh-uh. It's still hard, classic Opeth...just sans growls. And these guys are good enough that I don't even mind.

10 out of 10 stars.

As a fan who got into Opeth via Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson, I'll have to check this out. (And yes, I generally prefer my progressive metal with clean vocals... the music and vocals make a nice contrast that way, and I love Mikael Akerfedlt's clean voice.)

By the way, have any of you checked out Storm Corrosion? Granted, if you want metal and growling you probably won't like it, but it's a collaboration between Mikael Akerfeldt and Steven Wilson (who mixed Backwater Park, Deliverance, and Damnation).

Just checked them out on amazon. Wow, dark and trippy! Pretty much sounds like Damnation, and like that album I wish it was backed by hard guitars, but that's OK--the eeriness is delicious enough. Hard to find a genre to put it in though. I think I'll call it my listening while drunk and reflecting on my WIP music, since that's what I use Opeth for.
