Hello everyone,
I have been reading this site for months and finally decided to register. I am 27, and have been an avid reader and have 'sort of' been writing since elementary school. By sort of I mean that I have always had stories in my mind and have written the beginnings, outlines, notes, or snippets of images for years, collecting them in notebooks and massive folders on my computers, but had never completed anything. Further, I have, for reasons I don't entirely understand, been embarrassed by my desire to write and have done so secretly without telling anyone.
Recently, my wife lived in a different city for 3 months and I took this as an opportunity to buckle down and finally write something. I did, sort of. This time, by 'sort of', I mean I didn't finish the story before she came back. But she returned a few months ago and when she did I told her I was trying to write a story. It took me a couple more months to finish a draft of the short story I was working on, which I did a few weeks ago.
I put the story on hold for a while and my wife finally read it this weekend. I also finally read it with fresh eyes and see the revisions I want to work on. My wife was, of course, supportive, but the little amount of feedback was not enough as I think I need, and I didn't want to press her for more.
I am studying for my PhD in physics, so writing has been, and will be for a while, a back up. But honestly, and I've never told anyone this, I would give it all up if I could make a living writing. I've always known that.
So here's to ripping the band-aid off and trying as I can! Has anyone else felt embarrassed by their desire to be a writer? I intend to revise this story and submit it to a magazine I've read since I was in elementary school (not because I have any illusion it'll be accepted, but because i've read it for years and it's been a dream to just have something complete to send them) and then work on other stories.
